[newbie] Removing Drive 0 of Dual Boot System

2000-01-12 Thread Jim Vaughan

I am currently running a dual boot system with Win98 on Drive 0 and
Mandrake 6.1 on Drive 1. The boot is setup in the MBR. I want to
remove Drive 0 and make it a Single Drive system using only the Mandrake
6.1 drive. Is there anyway to do this without reloading completely?

Thanks,
Jim Vaughan

Re: [newbie] Modem

1999-12-24 Thread Jim Vaughan

You will be out of luck with that particular modem. It is a 'winmodem'
style and will not work with Linux. You may want to consider swapping
it out with an ISA model. My solution was to hook up an external modem
to COM1 (/dev/ttys0). Left my PCI internal in the computer. I use it
for Win98 and the external for Linux. At the price of external 56K
modems I kind of like my solution over others but you will need to
decide which is best for you.

linux does not recognize my modem.
My modem is conexant soft k56 PCI Modem.
( I am able to use it from windows 98)

Any set up needs required to acheive this.
Any pointers would be appreciated ?

[newbie] MandrakeUpdate problems

1999-12-07 Thread Jim Vaughan

When I go to install the update for MandrakeUpdate I get a dependency
problem. Supposedly wget and grpmi are not installed on my system.
Where should I go to find these two files on the Mandrake distribution?
or where can I download them from?

Thanks in advance,

 Help!

I want to set the screen resolution of my Q-71 monitor to 1024x768.
Problem is that installation of Mandrake Linux 6.1 set default
 resolution to something around 1280x1024.
When using xConfigurator, the default resolution is about 640x480 with
the screen moved to the right... and screen is larger than the
 monitor.
 What should I do???
 Thanks

When you run Xconfigurator you will be told the default resolution,
somewhere in there you get the opportunity to choose. At that point go
in and set the resolution for what you want it to be.

 Help Again!

My modem is ISA PnP. the Windows settings are COM 4, IRQ 11.

When using Dialer and trying to interrogate the monitor, I receive
message saying that modem is occupied.. which is truly false.(I use
 the right stty3)

Is there a way to manually set the IRQ in Linux or should I configure
the modem as non PnP? if I do so, i will set it to COM 4, with the IRQ
who goes along with this Com port and I guess this will cause some
 problem when using Windows...

 Thanks again for help.

Actually I did the same thing. It doesn't really cause any problems in
Windows excepts that you will have to reinstall the modem and its
software if needed. I have found that I can make things alot easier if
I just delete the modem in windows and then reinstall the drivers with
the modem setup as non-PnP.

That occurs when my input connection is loose or not connected. I have

After several re-installs and reconfigurations of internet sofware, I
think I've finally gotten pretty close to where I'd like to be. I can
use my ISP connection as an unpriveleged user! Linux also doesn't
gobble 73% of my HD. I'm learning alot, and when I get some more cash,
I'll be getting some better books. I guess my "Mastering Windows 95"
book is pretty useless now as well as "The Expert Guide...". This has
been somewhat fun, if not frustrating for me and my family. I'm
learning alot, and am thinking about finding another ISP that offers
Linux/Unix support. There's plenty of smaller ISP's, and I'd think some
of them would be more inclined to offer support. Mindspring tries to
help, but let's face it, Linux hasn't quite gotten the market share as
 Microsoft and Mac.

I would have to highly recommend Corecomm.net as an ISP that provides
support to the Unix/Linux community. They were and have been very
helpful as well as providing the necessary info to setup my ppp
connection.

Re: [newbie] Changing Graphics and setup programs

1999-10-15 Thread Jim Vaughan

I'd have to disagree with youwhen I start the installation of
Linux-Mandrake the installer says RedHat. Now I wonder why that would be if
there was no connection between the two. In the Introduction on page 4 of the
Getting Started Manual it says "This award-winning distribution of Linux is
based on the popular Red Hat 6.0 distribution and is 100% compatible with the
Red Hat distribution." It also states "Linux-Mandrake has been customized by
MandrakeSoft S.A. to be easier to install and use, without sacrificing any of
the distribution's capabilities.

First, and please do not take this offensively, but Linux-Mandrake is not
RedHat Linux. They are two entirely individual distributions, with no
 connection to each other.

As for changing your video driver, you can run Xconfigurator to accomplish
that. Also, I think there an other configuration tool for the X-windows
system as well, but I can't remember the name at this point. Hope this is
 useful,

 Ernie

  Hello,

Thanks for the reply. I found some Q/A on the internet stating that SiS
chips don't run with Linux. I'll probably just get another video card
 that
does work. I see 2Mb ATI PCI cards on eBay for $10.

How do I re-run the setup to install a new video driver? (or anything
else...I still need to load my sound card module) I don't have a bood for
Red Hat...I do have SuSE but I couldn't get past partitioning with it so I
put Mandrake on instead. The books I have on SuSE and Caldera describing
the setup utility don't seem to work with Mandrake RedHat.

  regards,
  Tony Z.

   Tony

I got the same problem. And have been working on it for about 2 weeks
 now
with nothing to show. I thought that it might have been my Network Card
since I had problems with it when I ran Windows 98 and the N-Card in
 that
they were trying to use the same IRQ. well i uninstalled the card and I
still have the same problems. Glad to see I am not the only one though!
If ya come up with any thing let me know and I will do the same for
   you...

This is a message I recieved the other day... as for what it means I
 have
no idea. I have yet to figure out where to get to these settings. I have
used the Linux install disk and SETUP to change my settings and XE86conf
and none of these help anything out.

James,

Are you sure you are connecting or are connected. I sometimes get this
same problem on startup and it normally means I either didn't connect or
haven't completed connecting. Since I am catching this thread
mid-stream I apologize if this has already been discussed.
