Re: [newbie] Junk OS

2000-02-11 Thread Joe Sircy

Who told you Linux would just jump into your box and start working? I don't see
that in the manual anywhere (mispelled or not). I agree, windoze is far easier
to install than any distro of linux, but the power of Linux is far past
windoze.. I mean, I am at work, checking my mail on my Linux box through telnet.
Also earlier today, I installed a new kernel, rebooted my system, and wrote a
few emails, and I havent even seen my computer! I can do all this, and all I
did was install the basic installation about 5 days ago...

and on your SCSI drive...if you think Linux (or any OS) has "screwed up" your
drive, you do need help, and you sholdn't be trying to install ANY OS.

 Hello;

not me having to pay for an internet connection. besides if i am in the
middle of patitioning my hard drive, How in the hell am i supposed
to email you(THINK). Secound, Your book is full of inconsistantcies,
you software(installation) will not even recocgnize a generic monitor.
Now with all of the problems that i have encountered with "your"
software, it would take about 6 months to install it if i had to wait 24
hrs. for every question to be answered. Next, If your going to sell
something, it would make good sense to spell check your manual. GEEZZZ
It is easy to see why Microsoft has the major part of this market. I can
exit your(junk) and repair my SCSI drive(after your OS has completely
screwed it up) and one hour later it is up and running(network cards and
all). I guess you are wanting to know what i am getting at here.

WHO DO I SEE ABOUT GETTING MY MONEY BACK? "yea right"

 P.S.

Anyone resolved the PPPd problem yet, you know, the one that asks for a
password when the remote host tries to give me a dyn-ip address?

What web browser does everyone use with Linux?

I hate to say it, but the main reason I keep booting back to windows
 every
couple hours is because the NS version that comes with Mandrake just
 totaly
blows, and If I want to view any web pages I have got to have a decent
  browser.

Have you tried using the browser built into KDE? kfm, I think, just put
 an
http:// URL in the location box and hit enter.

I had probloems like that once, and I brought up a terminl window after
connecting, and waited for the password prompt, and that solved it.

  who needs windoze?

sorry, I am new. I agree dreamweaver is the bomb, and I wish it was that easy
in linux. I just switched to linux(see below) but before, I had the 30 eval of
dreamweaver 2000asp, and that was really nice, but I am forcing myself to make
do with linux. -- Joe Sircy Linux user since Febuary 5, 2000

Can anyone help me through installing a new kernel in mandrake 6.5?
  Joe
There is a good compiling howto at www.mandrakeuser.org
If you got a Mandrake RPM, just click it (as root) click
install, then edit lilo with klilo. Change "kernel to boot"
to your new one eg: vmlinuz-2.2.13-7mdk to vmlinuz-2.2.13-22mdk

 -WBD

Thanks Warren for your help, I am now writing you on vmliuz-2.2.13-22mdksmp
that was easier than I thought!
