It's only the fonts that look coarse.
I have tried all kind of different configurations under KDE fonts, but the
 fonts stay the same.
Mandrake 10.1 worked fine, so is this a problem with the new Xorg font
 system ?

Font anti-aliasing seems to be working now.
However it seems you have to reboot ypur PC (or X server).
These are the settings for my system:
- switch anti-aliasing on
- leave exclude range off
- use subpixel RGB hinting, style medium

[newbie] Mouse wheel not working in Mandriva LE 10.2

2005-06-08 Thread John Zoetebier
After upgrading Mandriva LE 10.2 from Mandrake 10.1 the wheel on my mouse is
not working anymore.
It is a wireless Microsoft USB wheelmouse.
Worked fine in Mandrake 10.1 with some ACPI options like:
append=noapic nolapic devfs=mount acpi=ht

With the above settings the USB mouse did not work at all in Mandriva.
So I changed it to:
append=splash=silent

Mouse is working now, but not the wheel.
Wheel on PS2 mouse is not working either.

I looked in Xorg.0.log and found these error messages at the top of the log
file:
1)
Markers: (--) probed, (**) from config file, (==) default setting,
(++) from command line, (!!) notice, (II) informational,
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
2)

(--) PCI: (1:0:1) ATI Technologies Inc unknown chipset (0x5d44) rev 1, Mem @
0xd800/27, 0xff5e/16

However Xorg seems to have detected my ATI Radeon 9200SE graphics card.
Any ideas ?

Suddenly the wheel is working again :)
The only thing I remember having changed is in MMC change font size to 10 in

This may have changed the Xorg settings and as a side effect the mouse is
working now.
After rebooting the PC I discovered that the wheel was working again.
It am just guessing though

Are you sure? Usually USB2 devices are backwards compatible, and work,
but just slower, in a USB1 slot.

How incredible it may sound, but this is how I got USB 1.1 working on my PC.
An other option that works is USB 2.0 in FullSpeed mode.
However as soon as I use HighSpeed mode I can see that module ohci-hcd is
waiting for something and see an error message in messages.log.
The advantage of USB 2.0 is that I can use USB 2.0 devices that can run on
reduced FullSpeed, not my card reader.

 Depends.

If you mean putting the CD's in and doing a normal upgrade, then no
problems, as you will just get upgraded to the default KDE3.2 version.

If you then want to upgrade to KDE 3.3 after the initial system upgrade,
 then
there can be issues. The OE version of the RPMs are better than the CE
version, but better yet are the 3.3.1 ones from Club testing or Thac:

ftp://ftp.proxad.fr/mirrors1/ftp.mandrake-linux.com/Mandrakelinux/devel/testing/Mandrakeclub/10.1/i586

 http://rpm.nyvalls.se/index10.1.html

These work well, but can be a little temperamental installing :-)
Basically, uninstall all the Quanta, Util, Addon and KMPlayer RPMs first
before trying. There may be a couple more as well, but I leave those to
 you to work around.

 John.

Installation of Mandrake 10.1 did not go well.
The first thing I noticed was that the mouse did not work during the
install.
I should have stopped then
After installation of the second CD the system frooze and I had to force a
reboot.
After reboot I could not login to KDE.

However, I could fix the installation be a second install in text mode.
My wireless Microsoft mouse is still not working.
Initially there was also a problem with my USB Epson CX3100 printer.
However after rebooting with printer on, it was recognizes and is working

There seems to be alot of this going on lately. The consensus seems to be
that ipv6 is causing it. If you want to disable ipv6 you just add the

alias net-pf-10 off

Microsoft has patented the technology behind sudo.

Wonder if they will have any issues hiding the prior art on this one.

Microsoft is in a patenting frenzy.
They know that their days are numbered as they simply cannot compete with
the quality and price of Linux.
In addition, upcoming industrial giants like China prefer most definitely
Linux for reasons of national security and to build their own software
industry.
Microsoft hopes that one day their patents may serve as a cash cow.
As the SCO case is proving, this is probably an illusion.

 Hi all,

I'm looking for clues on how to set up Java (runtime environment) on my
mdk 10.0 box in such a way that:

 1. multiple applications can use it (Opera / BitTorrent client...)

 2. I know where to find it, in other words, where/how to install it

 Cheers, Marco

 I've done it this way:
Downloaded J2RE from their site (Sun's ?) in a rpm package.. installed it
and added to $PATH variable in ~/.bash_profile line :

 /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_04/bin

Now It looks like this :

 PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin:/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_04/bin
 export PATH

You'll have to logout and login to your user account to make it work, or
after adding the above to ~/.bash_profile you can type :

 export PATH=$PATH::/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_04/bin

You'll have to add same path to $PATH variable for each user account...
Of course in Opera you'll need to type Java path in Preferences --
Multimedia. It's something like this :

 /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_04/lib/i386

Make sure to validate java path.

I add /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_04/bin to ~/.bashrc
Then in shell type:
source ~/.bashrc

Now all changes to bashrc are available in the user environment.

Yes. Install the xmms-aRts plugin and open up xmms, go to Options,

Does anybody know how to fix this problem ?

Is it worth continuing with Arkeia ?

[newbie] Memory card reader shows carbage

2004-05-17 Thread John Zoetebier
I have a USB cardreader which is mounted automatically on Mandrake 9.2 as
/mnt/hd
This happens if I plug in the card reader with a multi-media card in it.
However when I open de mount I see the card reader reading, red light is
flashing, and see many entries with just carbage.
When I use the same cardreader on SuSE 8.2 it works just fine.
What can be the problem ?

Better than 9.2? Wow. I must be missing something, cuz 9.2 is (until I

I wasn't overly enamoured of 9.2 to be perfectly honest. While it was an
improvement over 9.1 in many ways there were things that I didn't find

Not all is coming up roses for everyone, and I'd be a total jerk if I
didn't
mention my weekend.

Mandrake 10 will not install at all on my system. Period.

One of the systems that RC1 installed on without trouble died a horrible
death
when I tried to upgrade it to 10.0 Community Edition on the weekend. I
then
tried to upgrade via ftp to full cooker with even less success. It self
destructed to the point that it corrupted the partition table beyond
recognition and that wonderful trick destroyed the Windows install that
was
on the disk as well.

Recovery required a full low level format and re-partitioning of the hard
drive with the manufacturer's disk utilities, and a re-install of
Windows.
Since the customer no longer had the RC1 disks, and since Community
Edition
and trying an ftp install from the (then) current boot.iso both tried to
do
the same thing all over again they are running Windows only for now.

They're using a Knoppix disk to satisfy their GNU/Linux jones.

I thought the idea was to get rid of the rest of the FSCKING bugs by
using
Community as a final testing/bug hunting release, then having an Official
Release, not screw up what was already working. sigh

I'll give it the rest of this week and next; but after that if the same
shit
is happening Mandrake can colour me gone.

Along with my friends/customers/acquaintances/family.

Apologies for the rant.
Mandrake web site mentiones explicitly that people who want a rock solid
release should wait for Mandrake Official,
which is relase 2 - 3 months after Community edition.
Mandrake Community Edition is for the explorers under us.
I recently tried mandrake 9.2 for the first time since years on a Toshiba
laptop.
I am very impressed with the stability (zero defects) and the quality of
the display under KDE (just is good as Windows 2000, more user friendly
