Anyway, after putting in the drivers, Star Office still botches up envelopes by printing them at the wrong orientation and then printing numerous pages of gobbledygook until I turn the printer off and delete the queue. Is your lpd daemon running? Is it set up to start in your setup? Whether or not it is, try typing "lpc restart all"--you may have to do this as root depending on your setup. I hope this helps. [newbie] want to reinstall sendfax
I needed to uninstall the sendfax rpm so I could try hylafax. Now I want sendfax back. The installation CD does not have any RPMs named anything like "sendfax". Can someone tell me what file on the CD I need to install again? Please note that "sendfax" does not come up anywhere in a search of files on the CD, even though after sendfax is installed, the name of the package is "sendfax". Thanks. Karen

Has anyone out there had any luck with Kvoice? (Fax/Answering machine) I got my modem working ok (as verified by the fact that I got Kppp to dial my cell phone! :-) But Kvoice seems to have unrelated problems... My modem is in there okay, but or instance, it crashes when I try to record a voicemail greeting, won't play any preselected .wav files I choose for greetings, it won't pick up the phone, it says it is sending spooled faxes and it isn't, --the list is endless. I also have it configured to play sound through my soundcard and it doesn't play anything as far as I can tell. Just wondering if anyone else had any luck, or if there's a better Linux program for this stuff. Thanks, Karen

Okay, I think I got java working in Star Office, so I won't be asking about that *exactly*. But, 1.) Has anyone gotten it to be configured for Real Player? I try to configure the applications but it keeps resetting what I do so I must be doing something wrong. 2.) Have you been able to log into Hotmail with Star Office's browser? When I click the Sign In button, it asks me what application I want to open it with. I have jdk117_v3 on here (as well as jdk117_v1a but that's not what I'm using at the moment). Paths are correct, $JAVA_HOME is set correctly, java environments are found by Star Office okay. Thanks! Karen

I have the same point of view as well, but would like to add that I would like a browser that is cleaner/smaller in overall diskspace AND not slow as all get out. It takes me a good 15 seconds sometimes to open Netscape or StarOffice. I would hope that the upcoming Opera, if it ever comes out, is better in that respect. [newbie] Printing problem - UPDATE
I restarted my computer and I can print now when I'm in *root*, in the console as well as in Xwindows applications such as Netscape. I still cannot, however, print from any other user. I am still getting this error: "lpr: cannot create /var/spool/lpd/lp01/.seq" Maybe I'm missing some permissions thingie, I don't know. I set everything in /var so that everyone could read, write and execute from it. Same thing goes for /dev/lp0 (yea maybe I didn't have to but I wasn't sure). Any help would be great. Thank you, Karen

Sam Gentile is right. I had the same problem which is one reason why I had to re-install Linux a lot. It occurred with *one* user out of three (i.e. it wasn't a "global" problem). As a rule, in KDE, when you click the "K" button, everything that is under the gnome menu pops up there by default. It would never ever go back to normal once it started doing that (i.e. restarting, logging out, etc. didn't help at all). There was a little black dot on the panel that said "KDE menu" or whatever, and clicking that little black dot there is the only way you can get to your KDE applications. Go to Gnome, and click on the panel "foot" thing and look at what pops up. Well, that's the same menu that is popping up for Sam Gentile in KDE! I've seen it happen too. I had been told to use Desktop Switching Tool--which did nothing. I had also been told to try editing my start menu, which does not take care of the problem at all. Just a little FYI. I was wondering, since it isn't a global malady, maybe it could be remedied if one could delete a "." file in their /home/$USER folder that sets desktop preferences, so it would be reset when they returned to KDE??? What do you think about that? I'm no longer having this particular problem so I can't test it out, but I just now thought of it. First of all I am now of the opinion that whole problem is out of the scope of Mandrake as a product, but rather, is a KDE bug that needs to be redirected to KDE. Ok lets see posible causes, 1) kappfinder was takeing a "long time", so you shut down the Xserver to see what was going on and kappfinder did not complete At the time I didn't even know what kappfinder was for, and had never used it. Unless I am mis-informed, when you remove a partition, all the information in the partition is irrevocably lost - forever! To my knowlege, Linux does not put any kind of information in the CMOS, or re-do the BIOS. If you remove the Linux partition, then do the DOS fdisk /mbr, that should remove any trace of Linux. Then reinstall to your hearts content. On the other hand, if the problems are persistent, then you may have either a hardware problem, or some incompatibility. KFM, unless I am sorely misinformed is the KDE file manager (perhaps a typo?). Since it is a KDE app, are you using it in KDE, or GNOME? Yes, it is one file manager in KDE (it seems to be the default one whenever I click on a shortcut to a directory, which is why this problem annoys me so much. I am using it in KDE and have these problems. Incidentally, it also behaves this way when accessed from Gnome. If you can give more concise information, perhaps someone on this list can assist you. Please include hardware information too. I have a QDI motherboard, SB16 sound card, Wisecom modem (that isn't recognized yet) on COM2, Serial Port Mouse on COM1, an unrecognized printer on LP0, 96MB SDRAM, an Intel 430TX Pentium 233MHz chipset, a KDE monitor, a second hard drive on DOS_hdb2 that's 2.6 GB, an Acer ATAPI IDE CD-ROM drive, S3 Virge video card... [newbie] Arbitrarily recognizes CD ROM drive
Hi, Most of the time Linux can't mount my cdrom drive, but it recognized it just 10 minutes ago for the first time. Why does it recognize it and sometimes it won't? Sometimes when it boots up, it sees it: hdc: Atapi 20x CD ROM drive 20k cache (or something like that--it goes by too fast for me to remember) hard linked hdc to /dev/cdrom Other times it doesn't recognize it at all--no reference is made to hdc during bootup, and I can't mount it after booting. I get the following error if I try to mount it: Could not mount Error log: mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/cdrom as a block device (maybe 'insmod driver'?) [newbie] Boot up arbitrarily recognizes CDROM drive
Hi, My Linux bootup seems to only recognize my CDROM drive when it feels like it, apparently. I noticed this morning for the first time I could mount it and view files on it. Now I've booted up several more times and hdc is not recognized. The CDROM is there in my linuxconf just the same. Here's what it says during bootup when it is recognized: hdc: Atapi 20x CD ROM drive 20k cache (or something like that--it goes by too fast for me to remember) hard linked hdc to /dev/cdrom --and ONCE when it said this, I was able to mount it. And if I don't get that during bootup, then I get this when I try to mount it: Could not mountError log: mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/cdrom as a block device (maybe 'insmod driver'?) By the way, it is a 24x CD-ROM drive, not a 20x. I don't know where to start for what other information to give you, so just ask what else will help you diagnose the problem. I'm clueless!
