Re: [newbie] Changing from KDM to GDM
My /etc/sysconfig/desktop file contains the line DESKTOP=GNOME. I believe /etc/X11/prefdm checks this file and if DESKTOP is set to Gnome, GDM is run. So I think you change the /etc/sysconfig/desktop file - Kathy Terry wrote: Anyone know how to change from KDM to GDM? Re: [newbie] no sound with xawtv
I have exactly the same problem as Chuck. I have an AverMedia TV-Phone card with the BT848 chip. Can you be more specific about what the options should be, and in which file (/etc/modules.conf?), or can you mention a document that contains the details? Re: [newbie] Hot keys for toggling btw text and graphic modes
I don't know if there are hot keys exactly, but generally whether you start in text or graphic mode depends on which run level is used. The run level can be thought of as a level of operation. Here are the default run levels for Mandrake: 0 - power down the machine 1 - single user mode 2 - multi-user mode w/o networking 3 - mult-user mode WITH networking 4 - (not used) 5 - multi-user mode with networking and graphical environment 6 - reboot the machine I'm guessing you want to be able to choose between runlevels 3 and 5. If you're using the lilo boot loader, you could hit Escape when the lilo screen comes up, then type the name of the lilo entry you want to boot followed by the appropriate runlevel number (linux 3 or linux 5). If you wanted to, you could create two entries in lilo -- one that starts Linux in text mode, and one that starts in graphic mode. But that's another e-mail. :) - Kathy Stephen Liu wrote: Hi All People, What will be the hot keys for toggling between text and graphic modes at starting Linux Thanks B.R. Re: [newbie] Can I run Mandrake on PPC Clone?
Are you asking whether there Mandrake is available for PPC? If so, the answer is yes (http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/ftp.php3#ppc). I find that it runs well on the G4 I have at work. However, if you're asking how it will run on a clone compared to an actual Apple machine, I wouldn't know. Perhaps the cooker-ppc list members could be of assistance? - Kathy David Bovill wrote: Sorry to repost - but I can't find anywhere to ask on the Mandrake site - and couldn't find any specific answers in the installation manauls... Re: [newbie] Can't boot on iMac CDRW
I run Mandrake on a G4. For some reason, I was never able to get OpenFirmware to boot Linux by default as soon as I turn it on. So when I turn on the computer, I go into OpenFirmware, then type (according to the number of my boot partition): boot hd:9,\\yaboot After that I get the yaboot boot: prompt and I type the name of the image I want to load. I, too, have read lots of different versions on the Internet of what is correct. However, if experience is any indication, txbi is not, although that's what I was told to use by the installation process. - Kathy Adam Nohejl wrote: Hello, (excuse my english, me from czech republic, me speak not very good:))) I have installed Mandrake Linux 8.0 on my imac and I can't get in the boot menu. If I type this in the open firmware setenv boot-device hd:12,\\:tbxi return shut-downreturn and restart the computer, a folder with a question mark appears on the screen, then the question mark changes into a mac os icon, happy mac appears and mac os starts loading. I also tried this (I don't know anything about the open firmware, so I just tried typing combinations of commands that I a saw in the installation tutorial): boot hd:12,\\:tbxi return boot and something like this flashed on the screen: loading elf finished and then the mac os started anyway:(. [newbie] cups and windows shared printer - stumped
I've been trying for ages (or what seems like ages) to get CUPS to print to a Windows 2000 shared printer. I am stumped. I tried to use kups to configure the printer (since people reported success with kups), but to no avail. The following lines appear in my /var/log/cups/error_log file when I try to print to my default printer, an HP Laserjet 4L: I [04/Dec/2001:14:00:34 -0500] Job 14 queued on 'hp4l' by 'root'. The file to which the error messages refer exists and is mode 644. The printer is physically attached to the Windows machine. I have no problem mounting a shared Windows directory on the Linux machine using my Windows network username and password. The command smbclient -L machine-name -U user says the printer is indeed there. I've no clue what to try next. Any pointers? Re: [newbie] security: tcpd daemon with /etc/xinetd.d/
My installation of xinetd (from the downloadable CD images) came with tcpd capabilities already compiled in, so that I did not have to add the tcpd information to my xinetd.conf file. When I make changes to the host.allow and host.deny files, xinetd restricts access accordingly, without any reference to tcpd in the configuration file. Have you tried this? (I welcome corrections if I'm off base...) - Kathy tek1 wrote: in my linux: the complete reference book on p.559, it explain that to use tcp wrappers (for monitoring connections and controlling access), we need to put tcpd in front of the service name in the inetd.conf file. however, mandrake uses the xinetd.conf file, which doesn't list the services. instead, it includes the dir /etc/xinetd.d/, which are the equivalent of listing the services in xinetd.conf. but how do we wrap the services in /etc/xinetd.d/ in a tcpd wrapper? thanks... -- For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. - 2 Timothy 1:7 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
