Re: [newbie] Ndivia TNT2 and UT2003

2002-09-22 Thread Kirtis Bakalarczyk

Unfortunately TNT2's don't support S3TC texture compression under Linux (It only works
in windows because directx emulates it)

So you're just gonna have to get a new video card which would have been a good idea
anyway because UT2K3 would run REALLY slow on a TNT2.

oops... they should warn people about that. I'm currently using kernel 2.4.8

*sigh* I guess this means that it's kernel upgrade time

[newbie] Mesa Help

2002-05-03 Thread Kirtis Bakalarczyk

I recently installed the newest version of mesa (4.0.2) (which was stupid
because it already worked fine i just had to tinker...) and all of a
sudden quake 3 won't work! Well actually it runs, just ral slow.

has anyone had a similar problem and if so, have they figured out how to fix
it. I need my stress reliever.

BTW, i tried reinstalling quake and it didn't work.

[newbie] Fluxbox and Mandrake 8.1

2002-05-02 Thread Kirtis Bakalarczyk

I have a small problem that hopefully will have a small answer...

I'm currently using fluxbox and i'd like to be able to use all those nifty
dockable apps that go into the "slit" and as far as i can tell, the way to do
that is to add a line into my .xinitrc file, but unfortunately mandrake sets
up it's window managers using a file in /etc/X11/wmsession.d (this is my
understanding of it anyway) Now when i add my app of choice to the end of
the fluxbox file (with the -w option by the way) nothing happens when i
restart (the computer, X, and fluxbox).

So my problem, as you may have guessed, is how to get those apps to start up
automatically without using a .xinitrc! (they do work, BTW. I know this
because i started them from the command line; i'd just like to not have to
start them manually)

And to further complicate matters, the last time i tried to generate an
.xinitrc file i ended up have to Alt-Ctrl-1 over to a different console and
delete the file because it locked up X. So i'm a little hesitant to try it
again.

A little help?

I tried Xtart but i got an error... i'm not really sure if i'm using it
correctly so i'll explain and you can tell me if i am.

So i booted up as usual, then when the graphical login showed up i switched
over to the first consolse and ran Xtart like it said to do when i logged in.
:)

But i get this error:

[newbie] CDROM problems...

2002-04-23 Thread Kirtis Bakalarczyk

For some reason that is unknown to me my CD-ROM refuses to work in linux and
i know it isn't a hardware problem because it works fine in windows.
And i know it isn't that it isn't mounted or something like that because it
produces a whole slew of errors at boot time. I've struggled with this one
for a while and it would be nice if i could install stuff off the CD for once.

Anyway here's the output from dmesg. Some help would be appreciated.

I downloaded the source and did the old ./configure make make install... And
since the option was available at the login manager i assumed it was all
hunky dory. Apparently not...

I checked and i actually don't have an .xinitrc. So is there a really
specific format or can i just use the exec fvwm part?

[newbie] Changing Window Managers

2002-04-22 Thread Kirtis Bakalarczyk

First off i'm using Mandrake 8.1 Standard

KDE is pretty sluggish so i decided to change to a more light weight window
manager. So i downloaded and installed FVWM (on a side note, if someone
could recommend a better one that would be helpful.)

Anyway FVWM installed fine so i restarted X and tried to log in with the WM
set to FVWM but it just starts up KDE like every other time.

A little help?
