Re: [newbie] is Discovery 10.0 shipping yet?

Carroll,

Thanks alot. I found the order tracking...now I feel sheepish...when I
ordered mandrake Power pack 10, I didn't see that it was a pre-order.
They're not shipping it yet! I know Suse is shipping theirs around May
7...I guess I'll search on the Mandrake website to see if I can find out
when PowerPack is being shipped.

IIRC, the last few distributions have shown up on the west coast first and
then migrated eastward. Evidently Mandrake ships the packages in bulk to
their west coast office where the individual orders are separated and
shipped
 onward to the customer.

There is a way of tracking your order at the Mandrake Store by entering
the
 order number.

[newbie] thanks Dennis Myers + lesson I learned about modems

2004-05-02 Thread Laura Callier
Hi,

Hope dennis reads this...I tried to send you a thank you privately but my
message didn't get through...thanks for the modem! When I get the mandrake
Power Pack I'll install it and see how the modem does..I'm sure it will be
fine.

I did learn a lesson about external modems...be sure to check in the bios to
see if the serial port is open! I have been playing around with some
operating systems, and none of them could detect it...checked on a linux
forum and someone mentioned checking to see if the port was actually open.

Hi all,

Thanks so much for all your suggestions as to brands of external modems.
This gives me lots of choices when I go searching. I have never shopped on
ebay, but that may be the way to go if I can get something alot
cheaper...I'm on a shoe string budget and would rather spend the $ on
operating systems.

[newbie] Linuxant drivers for conexant modems...anyone tried them?

2004-04-18 Thread Laura Callier
Hi,

There may be another way to get a workable modem for my Dell Dimension 8300
desktop...rather than get an external modem, I have been researching on the
Dell support list...

My Dell comes with a Conexant modem. Conexant has a deparmtent called
Linuxant(Linuxant.org) , where people using Conexant modems for windows can
get updated drivers of the Linux version. The particular thread on the Dell
list was a person needing to get a compatible modem for Mandrake...he
downloaded the linux version of his Dell Conexant windmodem from Linuxant
and things worked great.

Anyone tried this?

[newbie] re: Mandrake 10

2004-04-17 Thread Laura Callier

Hi,

I'm totally new to Linux and Mandrake. I have the 10
Community discs now. But, I decided to get the boxed official set because
I am a newby and the boxed set comes with a manual, and probably fewer bugs to
contend with. I should get the boxed set in a couple weeks.

About upgrading vs. clean install. I will definitely
do a clean install. I know from my experience with my Mac computer that a
clean install saved me from all sorts of grief. The advice on all the Mac
lists was to do a clean install because the computer doesn't have to work around
or through or in opposition to bits of detritous from previous settings and
data.

Also, thanks for reminding me about LUG...there are some
in my area and I think I will join one.

Laura

[newbie] OK...I need an external modem...any suggestions?

2004-04-17 Thread Laura Callier
Well, I've learned a Linux lessonI have a winmodem on my Dell 8300
Dimension desktop computer. None of the distros I've tried, including
Mandrake, will accept it. So, I did some research last night and learned
that an external modem in this situation is the best thing.

The ones advertized at the computer store near me (Microcenter) are Best
Data, Diamond, US Robotics and Zoom. Are any of these brands better than
the others? This would be for dial up right now. Each brand has several
types, which is confusing.

Thanks,
Laura

Re: [newbie] MK 10 and Windows dual boot solved + partition?

2004-04-13 Thread Laura Callier
This is advice I'll certainly use. I just started to work with 10.0. I may
want to partition my compter, and run xp and mandrake. I suppose I could
get Knoppix...also, from what you say, I could use any other distro to set
up a partition. I think I have a xandros and a fedora disc.

I do have a question about partitioning. If I decide to dual boot with xp
and mandrake, is there a particular size of partition that I should manke
for mandrake, or should I just follow the recommended partition of the other
linux distro I'll be using for the partitioning?

I had the same problem, came up with the same solution. Happened to me

Knoppix was my friend on both of those occasions.

Yes, I had the same problem, and yes, I fixed it - with a little

I had to install a new kernel, and then change settings for lilo.

Which kernel are you running, Laura? To find out, open a terminal
and give command uname -r (without the quotes), then copy/paste
 the results.

Then we need to check your lilo settings. From a root terminal
(won't work as normal user!) give command cat /etc/lilo.conf
(again, without the quotes) then copy/paste the output.

Once we know what you've got we can work out what to adjust!

I'll try shutting it down several times. And, you're right, they'll most
probably fix it with the official release...maybe I'll wait until then to do
any tinkering.

By the arrow I meant that when I clicked on shut off, the screen became
black, but there was stillthe outline of my mouse's cursor, which I could
move around on the black screen. Then, I pressed the power button and shut
it down from there.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by things shut down except for an
arrow, but I'm having a similar problem. It doesn't bother me that
much, because I rarely shut down, but when I click to shutdown in KDE, I
usually have to do it 3 to 4 times before it works. I assume that it's a
bug that should be fixed with the Official 10.0 release.

using the power button, but would prefer an auto shut off. Does
anyone know if 10.0 is designed for auto shut off or if this is a
glitch? It could be a bios problem, but wanted to see what experience
  other have had.

  Thanks,
  Laura

I'm not quite sure what you mean by things shut down except for an
arrow, but I'm having a similar problem. It doesn't bother me that
much, because I rarely shut down, but when I click to shutdown in KDE, I
usually have to do it 3 to 4 times before it works. I assume that it's a
bug that should be fixed with the Official 10.0 release.

I occasionally have the same problem on boot-up. I don't know why it
only happens occasionally - used to be Linux developers wrote bugs you
 could rely on ;-)

[newbie] Re: Fortran compiler

2003-02-17 Thread laura

I'm new in Linux. Before asking, I tried to use g77 or f77, but I don't have
them on the computer. I have the gcc installed and I can compile C programs
without problems, but I can't compile Fortran programs. I only wanted to
know where I can find this compiler.

Laura.

)?
  per scaricarti i driver:

Leggiti la documentazione!

spero di esserti stato utile,

[newbie] Man 8.0 and USB modem

2001-06-05 Thread Laura Goodwin

Hi everybody,

I'm dual-booting WinME and Linux (Mandrake 8.0). I have one niggling
setup problem, and I have already tried RTFM. I also tried the list
archives. No luck.

It's very simple: I am a rank Linux newbie. I don't know much, but I
do know this - I have got a new version of the kernel, and I do have USB
support. I also have a hardware-corrected USB modem which is
supported. I know how to set up kppp. When I look for my USB devices
with USBview I see the modem there, and it is correctly identified. How
do I get my modem to work? Is there anybody out there who has their USB
modem working under Linux? How did you do it?

I want to be able to select USB port for modem in kppp. That is not
possible right now, because that option is not in the list, although it
certainly should be.

Thanks,

Laura Goodwin

I had a problem like this (different printer but the same symptoms)
with Samba, and the magic word to add to smb.conf turned out to be:

 print command = /usr/bin/lpr -r -h -P %p %s

I don't know why this isn't in the default smb.conf file; I found it in the
SMB-HOWTO.

Rick xcdroast already installed. I think it is worth the

Does it have xemacs 21.? ?
