[newbie] Messed up my boot up
I've been messing around with my LM 7.1. I'm attempting to update a number of packages so I can compile the latest kernel. I upgraded e2fs to version 1.19. This installs files in /usr/man/man1 man8. It installs files such as xxx.1 and xxx.8. After installing these files, I went in and deleted what appeared to be duplicates. I did this because the INSTALL suggested that if I didn't remove them, the system would keep using the older versions. When I tune2fs --version I got the previous version number. So, I went in and deleted the .bz2 version of every duplicate I had. (i.e. xxx.8 xxx.8.bz2). The only problem is, I think I deleted more pairs than files that got installed. The version number that it displays is now correct. However, I screwed a boot file. As it tries to mount one of my hdas, it drops into fixit mode. I don't have any problem reinstalling 7.1 and doing all of this all over again. Right now I'm just playing with it. Nothing serious. However, if there's a way to avoid all of that, I would appreciate it. Anyone know of any way to recover the man files I deleted without reinstalling? Maybe learn a little about system fixing and recovery.
[newbie] Problem with install of 8.0
I had 7.1 set up as a dual boot on my CTX notebook. The bios will see something around 6G max on the harddrive. I installed a 10G HD that I had prepartitioned into 2 5G drives. I have windows on the first and had 7.1 on the second. Since I hadn't really gotten very far into setting up 7.1, I deleted the partition that it was on and started to install 8. During the unpacking of Linux, it gives me a crc error. I grabbed the iso from another site (thinking I had a bad copy) and tried it again. It stopped at the same point. The 7.1 install that I ran from windows worked great. Now I'm wondering if this new install from the bootup floppy is conflicting with the way I have the HD set up. Anyone have any ideas? [newbie] Need help installing 2 NICs
I'm setting up a firewall system for a DSL connection using 7.1. I'm using 2 identical ISA NE2000 comp. cards. Win98, on the same machine, recognizes both of them and sets them okay. I'm assuming I have to get Linux to recognize these before I can assign them as eth0 and eth1. The installer wouldn't recognize them (although I did try). How do I go about doing this? [newbie] Problem playing MP3
I'm running LM 7.1 on a CTX 770 notebook. It has an internal SB 16 compatible. I have set it up with HardDrake. I can get the .WAVs to play with no problem. MP3s are giving me a problem. I've used kmp3 and a couple other media players (the ones that come in 7.1). The player seems to load the file. The timer seems to progress at something like quarter speed. And no sound is outputed. The MP3 plays in Winamp and Windows Media Player without a problem. Any ideas would be much appreciated. [newbie] Problem copying files to linux partition from windows partition
I've done this several ways. I'm trying to copy an MP3 file onto a Linux partition. I've tried copying it off a CD and I've tried copying it right out of the windows partition. I'm getting an error when I do this, and the error message suggests that maybe I don't have permissions for this. Any ideas or suggestions? [newbie] Can't get changes to stick
With Mark's help, I have Mandrake 7.1 installed on my notebook. My current issue is that I can't get changes to take and stick. I run sndconfig, and get the test sounds with no problem. But I can't get KDE to allow me to setup system sounds. Even the test button doesn't generate anything. The other item covered under this issue is my video. It recognizes my Neomagic chipset with no problems. But it won't let me change the resolution from the 640x480 default. The panel is 800x600. Also, changing the monitor from SVGA 1024x768 to generic panel 800x600 does nothing. The change will not stick, and my resolution will not change. Can someone prod me in the right direction for solving this issue? RE: [newbie] How many partitions?
Question for you. I'm trying to do this with 7.1 on my notebook, and the system locks at the partition setup. What kind of problems were you having, and what did you end up doing? How was your drive partitioned prior to attempting the ManLin install?
