Re: [newbie] VCD player?
I tried using it but I only get a small size screen and the frames rate is only aroung 18. Not to compare to commercial win programs like XingMPEG which runs at full screen with frames rate up to 30, maybe, Linux needs a little bit more RAM as mine is only 64 Mb. But one thing, which I'am quite sure is Linux seems to be easting a lot of my RAM because whenever I run KDE, which in order to use MpegTV , I see only 7 Mb of my RAM free. Well, I'am sure all of those utilized RAMs are probably put into good use like networking stuff. Hey, thanks for the tip. [newbie] what is linux-up?
I installed linux 6.1 and also lilo to go with it. At the lilo prompt there are 3 options that I can choose. There is "DOS", "linux", also "linux -up". Now, I don't know what's the difference between "linux" and "linux-up". Also, if I boot under "linux" I can't shutdown the machine as it would hang forever on the last message which is the "power off". On the contrary, the machine will shutdown normally if I boot under "linux-up". Can anybody explain this to me this?. I think it really does affect anything but it's good just to know it anyway, right? Thanks in advance.:-) __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

[newbie] why is it so slow?
I have installed the Ln4Wn from the Linux-Mandrake cd. The installation was no prob. But when I go into into the Xwindow enviroment, I find that everything seems so sluggish and slow. I have also installed StarOffice5.1 and the installation was a breeze event though it was also very slow. Despite this I have been using Linux for about two weeks now. Also another thing is sometimes my machine freeze when I am using Xwindow and Glax as theme.( I am using KDE by the way) So I did a little bit of testing between themes and I found out that when I am using Glax and numerous other themes and try to move any window box move horizontally 'SLOWLY', the machines will freeze. The only theme that doesnt't freeze my machine when I do this is the windowmaker."WHEN I SAY SLOWLY,I MEAN SLOWLY AND STEADY" Contrary to this, when I use win98 everything is quite fast and normal. So could anybody please explain to me why I am having this problem? Could it be that Xwindow is using way to much memory than is needed? I hope that this 'freeze' problem is a bug and not a my machine's RAM fault. My box is a PII 400 Mhz, 64 Mb or SDRAM, 6.4 Gbyte hard disk, Voodo Banshee AGP display card. __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

I have tempted to go ahead and buy from a vendor but I know the vendor will tell the wrong things about the modems that are supported by Linux. Can anybody help me? Just get an external. Virtually any of them should work with linux. I'll recommend USRobotics 56k v.90 faxmodem. If you must get an internal, be certain it is an ISA. Make certain that the box doesn't indicate that Win 9x is a requirement. [newbie] unsupported! try your luck!
Hi, I was introduced to Linux-Mandrake 6.0 last June and I managed to install it myself after spending almost 6 hours. This is because first I didn't know that Mandrake doesn't support the newest brand of hardware out there, especialy top brand video, audio and modems. My machine is a PII 400 Mhz,Asus 440BX slot1 MB,6.4 Gig hard disk, Creative 3dfx Voodo card, Yahama XG, and a Motorola chip modem. All of this combinations of hardware is unfortunately isn't supported by except for a few. After painstakingly combing the net, I finally found a beta version driver for the graphic card and I also found a commercial driver(hence $$)for the sound card. But my joy was short lived, as a few weeks after that the hardware went kaput one by one. Starting from my 32 Mb SDRAM, next the soundcard, and then finally my graphic is a bit crazy now(fuzzy lines at 600*480 and at 1024*9800). This of course will need about $300 to replace. However, I cannot attribute the breakdown of the machine to Mandrake wholly but somehow I feel that during the many hours of trying to adjust(espcially the graphic, XF86setup) the system I couldn't remember just how many times I rebooted the machine. And I couldn't set aside the probable tear and wear of my machine. So, that's why I am sharing this with you'all. I just want to warn potential users of Mandrake(newbie) to be wary about the potential dangers here. Lastly, does anybody know the exact hardware supported by Mandrake 6.1? If anybody know then feel free to mail me. __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
