[newbie] Installing glibc-2.2.4

2001-09-09 Thread Naish

I've installed Pan 0.10, but it won't work unless I install glibc-2.2.3 or
newer. I've downloaded 2.2.4 but when i'm installing, it downloads
glibc-devel-2.2.3 also, and, when it's installing, It reports an error:
gcc 2.6 has a conflict and glibc(the version I have) too. So, I can
ignore, but I don't know if all will work after this... so, I canceled. What
should I do? Uninstall glibc old version and then try? or just ignore?
or what?

Re: [newbie] Kmail / Konqueror question / bug report

2001-09-08 Thread Naish

In KDE, go to:
Configure - KDE - File Browsing - File asociations
and there, look for html extension. Konqueror will appear as
preffered app to open it. Just add or select Netscape Navigator first.
I don't know nothing about that bug...

Running Mandrake 8.0 with KDE 2.1.1 and Konqueror 2.1.1 and Kmail 1.2
(all standard with the M8.0 power relase)

When I click in a URL in an email on kmail, it starts Konqueror to
 view the URL.

 1) I want to use Netscape or Opera as my default instead, but can't
find where to change the default

 2) Konqueror frequently crashes under the following conditions, which
is why I want to make the change:

I have ads.doubleclick.net (and a couple of varients) resolved in my
/etc/hosts file to 127.0.0.1 to both speed up downloads and more
importantly to protest their previously announced intentions to
harvest personal information from people browsing pages which include
 doubleclick banner ads.

Konqueror sometimes reacts to the inability to find the appropriate
doubleclick banner(s) by giving me one or more error popup boxes.

On a fair number of occasions when dealing with these intentional
errors, Konqueror crashes, with the following info showing in the
SIGSEGV (signal 11) crash handler. I've yet to get these on pages
that dont have these error boxes popping up, and the offending class
in the trace is a red flag, which is why I suspect the connection:

WORKAROUNDI've seen suggestions elsewhere that resolving to 0.0.0.0
instead of 127.0.0.1 to block obnoxious banner ads yields cleaner
 results. Opinions?/WORKAROUND

I dug thru the KDE bug reports database to see what I can find on the
topic, found none, and got told that the version of KDE released with
Mandrake 8.0 is too old for me to report bugs. Interesting. Have to
see if upgrading buys me anything.

[newbie] sound problems

2001-05-25 Thread Simon Naish

Dont know if you got this message (mail probs at the moment) BUT if you like heres
some more info...

If you have an app running artsd that gets killed with xtreme prejudice it leaves a
bunch of lock files in /tmp/YOURUSERNAME/ with the prefix art.

these files stop a fresh artsd running, check by opening a console and invoking artsd,
(just type artsd) it will give you an informative error message.

If these files do exist, rm them and try running artsd again then xmms or kde media
centre. If they work shut them down and reboot. Voila instant sound.

Otherwise...

Check that you've got an artsd sound server running on your system - use gtop if
you've installed it, its much friendlier than top.
If you havent got it set to run on start up then you wont get any sound. 7.2 had
problems with this that 8.0 has sorted. I'd advize a total reinstall if upgrading to
8.0, I tried an upgrade from 7.2 and had LOADS of trouble, just bakup yoour data and
go for the clean instal, then go and get the security patches esp the bash patch if
you do any C, and hopefully it'll all work.

[newbie] Getting c_cpp_refence.tar.gz to work for kdevelop

2001-05-24 Thread Simon Naish

I've tried getting the c++ reference to install but am having real trouble with the
./configure file.
I'm running Mandrake 8.0 and got the 'You don't have the file
c_cpp_reference-1.0.tar.gz file, go and get it' message.

On getting said file when I run ./configure on it , having unzipped it, it balks at
the QT libraries saying QT2 is the wrong version/ isn't installed... but the qt2
version that came with LM 8.0 IS installed.

What can I do (this is version 2.3.1 or something (I'm not in front of it right now)
the ./configure file seems to be limited to version 2.0 of QT2, can I hack the config
file to get the install to work???

I'd appreciate any help.

SI.

Thank you. I managed to get Linux setup to use my cable modem. I STILL

I've disabled plug n play OS in my BIOS. I've tried looking for sndconfig

understand what needs to be done to get my sound card to work! Anyone got

Just on the off chance, go to console mode and as root type in sndconfig.
this should be completely out of a desktop GUI and in root console only. Hope
that helps. As I recall under the creative labs soundblaster listings the
pro showed up when I ran sndconfig.
