Duncan,

1. What kind of Ethernet cards are you using?
2. Can you ping the machines?

Cheers,

Phil Lamey

Subject: [newbie] i cant start up a home network

I have a desktop and a laptop which i want to network under linux.
They both connect ok under windows and the network cards are both
recognised and functional according to lothar.

The problem i have is where next, using linux conf i have assigned names
and numbers such as

desktop 192.168.0.1

laptop 192.168.0.2

I am not getting the machines doing anything beyond this.

Have also installed vmware onto desktop machine and tried to host only
network it to linux using samba this too has been unsuccessful but maybe
i should crawl before walking.

It sounds easy if I could get into the part of linuxconf networking for
idiots that is described in the help section on networking but it
doesnt sem to be there.

I am running mandrake 7.0

Thankyou duncan

Cheers Group,

Someone sent me this question and it has me clueless. Cna anyone provide any insight on a solution that would work for both Linux and Winblows?

Thanks,

Phil Lamey

Hey Phil. I've got a Perl question for you. Do you know how to send an email, preferably with an attachment in perl. Without having to send an HTTP request to some isp?

Thanks.

Mike.

[newbie] Red Hat 6.1 installation gone bad and then gone worse...Please he lp

2000-04-03 Thread Phil Lamey

I was
trying to install Red hat 6.1 on a AMD 366 with 64 megs of ram over the
weekend.
Everything went well until the installation was
finished then the machine forze up while "Updating
Configuration".
When I
re-booted the machine I went straight to windows98 and never saw any Linux boot
up at all.
I then
realized I am a moron and forgot to set a boot partition.

I had
used partition magic to set the partition so then I went back in using patition
magic tofree up space for a re-install.

Problem is now that when I go through the install
steps, when I get to the part where the install should start, I flash to a DOS
window...see some security warning...and then a re-boot
occurs.

Can
anyone please help me with this problem?

Thanks,

Phil
Lamey

Maybe he should have joined the developer list instead of the newbie list. What does he expect. If we are newbie we have dumb questions. That can't be helped.

My two cents,

Josephvery well said. This guy doesn't seem to get it, that
this is a place to help and/or get help but not a place to rant
or vent. As I remember his very first post was as inappropriate
as this last one. At least I hope that it's his last one.

 Mr. Rial Juan,

I can only say that thank God I entered the world of linux before you started
spewing forth your rhetoric otherwise I would never have become as excited about the
challenges of learning linux. It's a shame that you have forgotten the help and
assistance you no doubt received when you first started.

To the original poster, please accept our appologies as this is in no way an example
of the fine help you'll usually find here. If you're unwilling to post again
please, feel free to contact me privately and I'll do the best I can (I'm no expert
 but I manage).

Mr. Rial Juan, welcome to my trash filter.
