[newbie] libGL.so.1.2

2003-07-08 Thread Rafe
Hi

I just started having trouble loading konqueror in the file view mode. When I
try to open my home directory by clicking on the home icon on my desktop, the
program starts and then stops before doing anything. If I try to run
konqueror by hand from a terminal I get:

$konqueror
Loading required GL library /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2
Segmentation fault

Re: [newbie] libGL.so.1.2 problems please help

This must be a bug. I changed my icons back to Slick in kde configure --
look and feel -- icons and now everything seems to work again!

I have no idea why any of this happened. Maybe I was some how running
different versions of the libraries?

[newbie] fonts

2003-06-09 Thread Rafe

Mandrake 9.1

My problem is that in some applications the fonts look washed out. It usually
looks like some form of Helvetica, but I am not sure. How do I control the
fonts that applications use in KDE?

KDE's control panel lets one change the fonts kde uses for menus and file
names, but I need to control the fonts within an application.

I know this is very vague. Any pointers on where to find information about
fonts would be appreciated.

I seem to remember having this trouble on a linux system years ago and back
then the solution including coping a bunch of fonts from a windows system and
using them within Xwindows. I kind of doubt that is still done, but please
correct me if I am wrong.

[newbie] Fonts - again

2003-06-09 Thread Rafe

O.K. so I guess this is still an issue. I have been reading about fonts in
Linux from several web sites, but still need help with this.

Mandrake 9.1 -KDE (3.1) running in the 1024x768 @60 Hz with 24bpd graphics
mode. I have downloaded and installed all the updates for this system.

Athlon 1Ghz
512 MB RAM
Over 200GB of disk storage over several IDE disks.
ATI Radeon 7000 video card. (XFree86 4.3 with 3D Hardware Acceleration)
Princeton 18.2 LCD monitor.

For now I am going to run in the 800x600 video mode, but would perfer a
different solution.

I connected into the above system from my Laptop running Windows NT 4.0
Workstation and copied all the fonts from the system folder over. I then ran
the Mandrake font installer from the control panel. It did successfully
install the fonts, but it did not fix my problem. In most applications the
fonts look jagged and thin. One can play around and find fonts that look
better than the defaults in about 60% of the applications. In a couple apps
I have not been able to find a way to fix the problem at all.

So why can't we have Mac like rendering of our fonts? Where does the problem
hide? Do people who buy their xwindows systems have this problem? Is this
an Linux issue or an XFree86 issue?
