[newbie] Linux with a PCI modem
All: is it fact that a PCI modem can't be used to dial and connect to the Internet? The modem I have is a 3Com 56K V.90 Mini PCI Modem. Hi: I am trying to configure my mandrake linux machine to connect to internet using modem. I followed the instructions at http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/connect/cppp.html and created/editing the /etc/ppp/peers/isp1, /etc/ppp/chat-isp1, chap-secrets and options files. [newbie] nautilus takes up too much memory
Hello All: I just installed Mandrake 8.1 on my machine. I have only 128M of RAM and machine seems to be already using up about 87MB. When I run top I see 5 processes of Nautilus each taking about 11MB of RAM. When I run other applications and close them (like the nautilus window that pops up when a CDROM is inserted etc), more of this nautilus process start coming up each taking about 11-15MB of memory. 1. Is Nautilus required for proper running of the GNOME? 2. If I remove this from the Startup Programs, what am I going to loose? Anybody have experiences with this? Thanks Ravi _ Do You Yahoo!? [newbie] new installation questions
I did a fresh installtion of 8.1 on a Mircon laptop. I have the following queston/problems 1. The installation does not seem to recognizing the mouse correctly. It always shows up as big white square instead of a pointer. 2. It default logs in in as a user userx. How can I change this to ask for a login and password. 3. Whenever I login, I see 4 nautilius processes running each taking about 7M of memory. Do I need this nautilus? How do I disable it. I have been a RedHat user for a while. Never seen this. [newbie] gnome taskbar icons donot come anymore
X : gnome Hello: when I run an application, an icon used to appear in the panel (like it appears in the taskbar of winodows). It doesnot appear anymore, so when I minimize the application,I lose that window. I still have the panel though. When I login as a different user it's normal, the icons do appear in the panel. So I am assuming it's somekind of panel setting. Anybody had a similar situation? Thanks Ravi
[newbie] How to write to FAT32 patition
I have the window2000 partition mounted onto my linux in a readwrite mode. I am able to write only as the root user. What do I need to do so that a normal user can also write. I have tried chmod -R 777 /win. When I try to write as a normal user I get the error: "can't open file for writing" in the vi terminal Thanks Ravi

I think the problem is with the default gateway on ur machine. When u are not connected to the internet having the default gateway set to 192.168.1.1 is all right. Before dialing to the internet delete this static route and u should be able to browse the internet. [newbie] looking up internet address for hostname hangs up my machine after gnome login
Hello: I use linux on my laptop at home and work. It usesthe samefixed IP address both at home and office. I recently installed the IBMJDK (using rpm) when I was connected to my office network and the installation was smooth. But when I took my machine home, it will go through the start up process (all processes start fine), but it takes a long time (almost 1 minute compared to few seconds before I started having problems) for the gnome login window to come up. Now when I login, a new window comes saying "looking up internet addressfor linux_ravi" (linux_ravi is my hostname)with a moving bar below. Eventually this window disappears and then the machine hangs. But back in the office network, it works just like before. I donot know what does it mean by "looking up internet address for linux_ravi". I have a fixed IP and the same default gateway everywhere. Looks like the gnome configuration is screwed up somewhere. or I am not sure about the cause I booted into text mode and removed the IBM JDK, but still see the same problem Could some one help me. Hello: I am tyring to install Mandrake Linux 8.0 on a laptop which has one 20Gb and windows me installed on it. Do I have to use partition magic and partition the drive first or can the installation process use (say 5Gb) for the linux during the installation process. I am stuck at the place where it is decides about the mopunt point/partition etc? I want to have dual boot with Windows me (15G) and linux (5GB) Could somebody help me or provide me pointers.
