Ravi, you may try this :

1.As I suppose you can get into a terminal/console, type su (without
 the quotes) to become root.
2.Open a text editor of your choice (I prefer Midnight Commander - type
 mc).
3.Open the file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and scroll to this section :

 # **
 # Graphics device section
 # **

 Section Device
 Identifier Generic VGA
 Driver vga
 EndSection

 Section Device
 Identifier Trident CyberBlade (generic)
 VendorName Unknown
 BoardName Unknown
 Driver trident
 #VideoRam4096
 # Clock lines

 # Uncomment following option if you see a big white block
 # instead of the cursor!
   Option sw_cursor

 Option DPMS on
 EndSection
 #
 *

Here, you'll probably see a #-mark in front of the Option sw_cursor -
 Remove it !
 4. Save the file and quit the editor.
 5. Logout or kill the X-server (Ctrl+Alt+Backspace).
 6. Login again, and you're done - I think.

[newbie] nautilus takes up too much memory

2002-02-06 Thread Ravi Malghan

Hello All: I just installed Mandrake 8.1 on my machine. I have only 128M of
RAM and machine seems to be already using up about 87MB. When I run top
I see 5 processes of Nautilus each taking about 11MB of RAM.
When I run other applications and close them (like the nautilus window
that pops up when a CDROM is inserted etc), more of this nautilus process
start coming up each taking about 11-15MB of memory.
1. Is Nautilus required for proper running of the GNOME?
2. If I remove this from the Startup Programs, what am I going to loose?

Anybody have experiences with this?

Thanks
Ravi

3. Whenever I login, I see 4 nautilius processes

[newbie] gnome taskbar icons donot come anymore

2001-07-21 Thread Ravi Malghan

X : gnome

Hello: when I run an application, an icon used to
appear in the panel (like it appears in the taskbar

minimize the application,I lose that window.
I still have the panel though. When I login as a

panel. So I am assuming it's somekind of panel

Anybody had a similar situation?

Konqueror is my fave. Opera, mozilla, galeon, and slipknot (or something
or
other that comes with the power pack) are all adequate enough, but
konqueror
is undoubtedly the best (imo). And if you like a netscape, get 6.1. It
is
very stable and useable, cause your right, 6.0 will crash every dern time
you
open it. If you like text only lynx is neato in a terminal (I like to
play
with it sometimes and it's handy if your X won't boot - so remember it for
future reference), and then there's links.

Re: [newbie] Internet Problems

2001-07-20 Thread Ravi Malghan

I think the problem is with the default gateway on
ur machine. When u are not connected to the
internet having the default gateway set to
192.168.1.1 is all right. Before dialing to the internet
delete this static route and u should be able to
browse the internet.
FYI to delete the route
route delete 192.168.1.1 defaultgateway (this
syntax may incorrect, all u have to do is delete the default
gateway)

  Subject: [newbie] Internet
  Problems

  Hi!

I recently set up a network and fooled around
with my networking config files and now DNS lookups don't appear to
work :(, which explains why I have been recently using Outlook Express
  to send emails...

Basically, I can connect to the Internet with
no problems but once I'm online, I can't do a thing.

If I type ping www.any website.com, this message pops
up on my screen:YPBINDPROC_DOMAIN: Domain not bound
And ping just sits there waiting forever.

If I run Konqueror or Netscape and type in www.any website.com, they also just
sit there forever and never load.

Before, I changed my config files, Internet
in Mandrake (I'm using 7.2) worked fine. I have always used kppp
to connect to the Internet. I have always been using the LT
  WinModem 5.78D driver.

What is wrong? I want to use the
  Internet in Linux, not Windows!

Perhaps, my config files have something to do
with this, so here they are :)

  --/etc/hosts:(btw,
I have named my computer "tux350" and theother one
on the network, "cups166", in my pretend domain
  "reisersun")--127.0.0.1

  localhost192.168.1.1

this file did not exist before I made
  it!):-tux350

  --/etc/host.conf:--order hosts, nis,
  bindmulti on

  --/etc/resolv.conf
(note: I use an isp called Bigpond, which has
everything- ip addresses, that is - starting with
  139)--#

entrynameserver 139.134.2.190 # ppp temp entry

   END CONFIG FILES
  -

I can't remember the numerous other config
files that I changed so please tell me if you need any others to help
  diagnose my problem.

Before I changed anything, my computer used
to be called the default "localhost.localdomain".

Please help me fix my config files so that I
can use my Internet connection again in Linux!

  Thanks,George

[newbie] looking up internet address for hostname hangs up my machine after gnome login

2001-07-18 Thread Ravi Malghan

Hello: I use linux on my laptop at home and work. It
usesthe samefixed
IP address both at home and office. I recently
installed the IBMJDK (using rpm)
when I was connected to my office network and the
installation was smooth.
But when I took my machine home, it will go through the
start up process (all
processes start fine), but it takes a long time (almost 1
minute compared to
few seconds before I started having problems) for the
gnome login window
to come up. Now when I login, a new window comes saying
"looking up
internet addressfor linux_ravi" (linux_ravi is my
hostname)with a moving bar
below. Eventually this window disappears and then the
machine hangs. But back
in the office network, it works just like before.

I donot know what does it mean by "looking up internet
address for linux_ravi". I have a
fixed IP and the same default gateway everywhere. Looks
like the gnome configuration
is screwed up somewhere. or I am not sure about the
cause
I booted into text mode and removed the IBM JDK, but still
see the same problem
Could some one help me.

Thanks
Ravi
