No. Explorer is only available for the Solaris and HP-UX versions
of Unix, and even then only on the Sun/HP hardware platforms.
Explorer is not available for Linux or any other Intel-based Unix.

[newbie] Configuring for 100dpi screens

1999-08-15 Thread Richard Lamont

Having just installed Mandrake 6.0 (including KDE) on my system I found
that I had a lot of trouble with font sizes.

Everything seemed to be geared towards an assumed display resolution of
around 75dpi. This seems pretty old-fashioned, given that most monitors and
video cards can support better resolutions. Even with a 2MB video card and
a 15-inch monitor you can get 1024x768 at 16 bpp, so a lot of people must be
wanting to work at around 100 dpi these days.

I have written a brief explanation of how to configure Mandrake for 100 dpi
resolution at:

Re: [newbie] Adding more RAM

I have always heard the swap partition should be twice the size of the RAM,
so here's my question. I'm going to add 64 MB to a system with a 128 MB
swap and the initial 64 MB. Do I have to resize my swap, and if so what
can I use to do it on the fly? Also, will I have to change any other
system files? Thanks for any help.

The 2:1 swap:ram ratio is just a rough rule of thumb. 128MB of each will
be fine. You do not need to increase the swap size.

i have the isapnp.conf set correctly with the card on irq 9. all the

what might be happening that i missed. here is the relevant section:

Soundblaster audio driver Copyright (C) by Hannu Savolainen 1993-1996
 SB 4.16 detected OK (220)
sb: Interrupt test on IRQ5 failed - Probable IRQ conflict
 SoundBlaster EMU8000 (RAM4096k)

it says it tries irq 5, but my card isnt on 5, it is on 9. i havent
been able to find what this driver is or what config it uses. i would
like to change its config to irq9, and i bet that will fix my problem.

any ideas on how to fix this?

/usr/sbin/sndconfig

How is this done in Linux?

On the command line: cat /proc/interrupts
In KDE: K-Settings-Information-Interrupts.

Note that inactive devices don't always appear.
I don't know why this should be.

I just latched on to a series from IDG books. Titles include "Linux

"Linux Internet Server". They are well written, very informative, don't

between Mandrake and Slackware I have found the general background to be
 excellent.

Having just moved from Slackware to Mandrake I can assure you that the
differences are considerable!

I would steer well clear of Slackware-centric books, and aim for a
Redhat-centric one. I'm afraid I can't be more specific.
