You can network between the VMware Guest OS Win98 and Linux if you (1)
accepted the defaults at installation and (2) have samba properly set up
in Linux with a public share.

Since the dual-boot, i.e. raw, installed on a *real* hard disk
partition version of Win98 isn't running, I don't see how you can
communicate with it with the VMware version. *This OS is not running!*
If you want to share data, move the raw Win98 data into the samba
public share, or make its data area public with samba (bad idea).

Why are you running crap like Win98 anyway? If you *have* to run
Windows, Win2K or WinXP will be *much* more stable with VMware.

The default smb.conf that comes with any recent Mandrake needs to be
edited only to define the machine workgroup and netbios names and to
uncomment the stuff about public shares (you obviously have to supply
the fully qualified path to it). It works right out of the box. Edit
smb.conf, stop the daemons with samba stop, run testparm to see if
you've made any terrible errors, samba start and you're good to go.
If you're running Shorewall, open 137-139/tcp and /udp. The easy way
to do this is with the Control Center | Firewall | Advanced.

As always with samba, it's easier if you have identical usernames and
passwords on both the Win and Linux sides.

My sound (AC'97 on an Epox board) didn't need any configuration at all
in VMware (other than to get rid of the Microsoft Sound at boot-up).

Ok lots of info. I HAVE to run 98 unfortunately. I have an older computer and
I can't get anything new until a new computer comes and still I will be stuck
with 98 on my Linux computer. Well if I can communicate with Linux that's
good enough because all I want is the data on the /mnt/win_c/ which will
allow me to communicate with my other Win98. I have a funny little problem
with my sound card. It can't seem to run Linux sound and VMWare sound at the
same time so I have to run Doom Legacy to disable Linux sound for a minute or
two and then run VMWare. Very wierd... I wish there was a Samba setting in
MDK Control Centre oh well I'll give it a try.

Mixing packages from different releases is a seriously bad idea.
Particularly with libraries on which a whole lot of other packages depend.
In order to resolve the dependencies you end up having to install a
 gazillion packages.

The advice I always give on this (newbie) list is :-

1/ Always use a urpmi source to get packages, where possible.
2/ If the package you need is not on a urpmi enabled source then download
it and use urpmi or gurpmi to install it. urpmi/gurpmi will pull in any
 required dependencies.
3/ If the package you want is not available on any source for your release,
but is available in Cooker, then rebuild the cooker .src.rpm That ensures
it will be built using the libraries on your system.
4/ If the package is not in Cooker, then compile from .tar.gz source using
'checkinstall' to turn the compiled code into an RPM. Using checkinstall
ensures that the RPM database is aware of all the installed libraries, and
also makes it easier to uninstall an app.
5/ Avoid the temptation to install an rpm built for a different distro
 (especially not libraries)
6/ Do not use --force or --no-deps to make an package install. If a
package will not install there is usually a good reason. Forcing packages
can result in really strange instabilities.

Since I started following these rules my system has been 100% rock solid.
For most newbies Step 1 is all they will need.

Well I do have some good news. I successfully installed KDE 3.1.4 ... Texstar
Edition. I didn't expect that little addon or some of the new wierd icons,

Re: [newbie] Upgrading KDE

2003-11-10 Thread Scott Naylor
OK so it looks like your urpmi.addmedia commands worked. Only point is that
the definition for your CD sources seems to be screwed up. Possibly because
you changed your CD-ROM to be ide-scsi You can correct that using the
Software Sources GUI in Mandrake control centre.

2nd point. If you want to install libqt3-devel the command to use is :-
 urpmi libqt3-devel

3rd point You do not actually need libqt3-devel unless you intend to
 compile QT/KDE applications

4th point You are getting those errors with libqt3-devel because it looks
like you have already installed a later version of libqt than is available
on any of the urpmi mirrors you have defined. The latest version of libqt3
on those mirrors is libqt3-devel-3.1.2-9.2tex.i586.rpm on Texstar, yet you
apparently already have libqt3-devel-3.2.2-5mdk installed. Consequently
urpmi is unable to resolve the dependency.

Looking at the mirrors I see that libqt3-devel-3.2.2-5mdk is on Cooker and
was only put there on 7th November So you have installed a package for
 Mandrake 10.0 on a 9.1 system.

  Result -

 -Dependency Hell-

 derek

I know what you mean about dependency hell, perhaps I'll try that other QT3
rpm file. It's worth a shot.

Make sure the kernel-doc package is installed and take a look here:
 /usr/src/linux/Documentation/input/joystick.txt
 also:
 /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/soundcard/chipset

This will give you the modules you need to install. For instance, I have a
 SBLive! X-Gamer and a MS sidewinder(gameport edition).

I have to load the following modules to get it to work:
 joydev
 gameport
 emu10k1-gp
 sidewinder

You can put the list in /etc/modules for your setup. If your joystick is
USB, your list will be different.

 Jim

I don't have the kernel-doc package installed and I don't know where to get it

You may have to update your ld.so.cache file so that LIBTOOL can be
located by the dynamic linker. You can update the file by executing as
 root:

 # ldconfig

Also, the LIBTOOLS must be in the directory /usr/lib, /lib, or be
specified in the /etc/ld.so.conf file before this command is run.

Also, are you running make install as root?

 HTH

 Scott

Yes I am running make install as root. I already did a ldconfig and updatedb
as root before trying to make install again. I'll take a look at those files
though and see what happens.

Can anybody give some good advice what went wrong ?

Well I may not know what went wrong, but I have a couple of suggestions.

1. Open the K3b setup program again.

2. Re-install K3b.

One of those should work I believe.

KMidi and Timidity work fine, but I need MIDI's to play on request from games
such as DOOM Legacy... I thought if KMid worked, they would work. How do you
get MIDI to work in games?

Ok I attached the ReadMe file to the topic Video, but I couldn't edit it

I do try to answer questions, but I am completly new at Linux, I've only been

I'm not sure what old linux is, but I think it's carried over after a fresh

immediatly remove that option. As for LinuxNonFB I can't be positive what it
is, but I think it's a more secure form of Linux. I've never booted into it
because I didn't have to. As for my Lilo it's got a lot of stuff

There's a couple more but I don't remember them... but I hope I helped.

[newbie] lex: command not found

2003-10-24 Thread Scott Naylor
I've been trying to install VisualBoyAdvance from source lately and I've been
having a problem. Every time I try to configure I get this error

checking lex output file root... ./configure: line 1402: lex: command not
found
configure: error: cannot find output from lex; giving up

I think I need the lex command or lib or something like that anyway. Does
anybody know where I could get this?

[newbie] /dev/sequencer not found.

2003-10-23 Thread Scott Naylor
I have recently been trying to use KMid, but I have run into a problem. KMid
uses a device called sequencer. I've looked in my /dev folder where it said
it was, but it isn't there. The commands locate and which also can't find
it. I have a Sound Blaster compatable sound card and I was wondering where,
or how I can fix this problem and get sequencer installed and working. I am
running an OSS Sound System, and am using an Ensoniq sound card.

lsmod gives me this...

You are using the OSS sound driver when the link DarkLord pointed you to
recommends the Alsa driver for Midi.

Your card should work OK in 9.1 with the Alsa driver. If the Alsa driver is
correctly installed it will install a midi module for you

In my experience the easiest way to set up alsa is to install the
alsa-utils RPM from your CD and then run 'alsaconf' in a root terminal.

It will test your card and write a new /etc/modules.conf file which will
load the correct modules for you.
Be sure to back up your old modules.conf file because it will not copy the
other configuration lines for your Ethernet or other devices. You must add
 those again by hand later.

 derek

Only one problem with that stratagy. I want my MIDI files to work with OSS if
that is possible.

Hey I just did this a little bit back. You go to NVIDIA.com and choose the
Drivers section. Look for your card and you should run into a driver called

Linux IA32

Go download that file and put it anywhere you like. Then follow the
instructions at this link

ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-4496/README.txt

to finish it off. Note that the file as XFree86Config that they refer to is
really XFree86Config-4. Be sure not to get them mixed up.
