Subject: [newbie] Update Program

I have a Mandrake 6.0 setup behind a Wingate 3.0 proxy server connected
to a cable modem, and am unable to connect with the Mandrake mirror
sites to obtain updates. According to the Wingate information, I need to
change the port on my FTP client (Mandrake Update?) from port 21
(standard FTP port) to port 80 to connect through my firewall. I have
been unable to discover how to make this change in the Mandrake Update
program. I would appreciate any suggestions.

till Linux says shut down to physically power down the system.
Any ideas are welcome.

Where do I define the gateway device as ppp0 and my

Thanks

If I understand you correctly, you have a P90 linux box and it
has a modem to an ISP while you have Ethernet connections between the
  computers.
Well, define your gateway device as ppp0, and leave gateway address blank
No real reason to set up dhcp with so few machines.
Make your Linux box look at eth0 as 10.0.0.1
  On your windows box
  Right Click Network Neighborhood
  Click TCP/IP and select "properties"
Give it the IP address 10.0.0.2 Tell it the gateway is 10.0.0.1
  Disable WINS reolution
Type in the IPs of the DNS servers your ISP gave you after you ENABLE DNS
and put in the hostname of your linux box. If your ISP didn't give you
any, run a traceroute to, say, 195.186.30.244 and pick stuff six or seven hops
from you, likely to be near the internet backbone and put THOSEIP
  numbers in your DNS list.
  Then take a browse to
  http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/IPCHAINS-HOWTO-3.html#ss3.1

And those instructions should make everything work, provided you have set
up Kppp properly for your modem
If you want to get fancy...
Make this file, or one similar to it
  #!/bin/sh ipchains -P forward DENY ipchains -A forward -i ppp0 -j
  MASQ echo 1 /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
and Save it in the appropriate /etc/rc.d/ directory or Save it to your home
directory, chmod to make it executable and drag it to the Autostart folder on
  the K desktop.
After all of that, your windows machine should be able to access the
internet with little to no protection from all the exploits out there.
Since you have the URL to look at ipchains, read on and discover how to
protect it better and maybe eliminate some of the annoyances from imgis.com
and doubleclick.net from that important resource.
  Good luck

Re: [newbie] Linux for home consumers?

1999-08-16 Thread Stephan Rex

Hi Richard,
I am a linux newbie, but have been in IT for 5 years no and from that back
ground I would say Linux is in the stage "coming of age". I believe it is
not for the new computer user but is definitely for the average- advanced
computer user. Someone with a little computer experience under their belt.
With a few more click and pick interfaces, and support for more types of
devices eg usb and more divervse device support it will become a Windows
killer.

If linux developers got the support from hardware and software manufactures
that Microsoft does, Linux would have already beaten Microsoft for the most
superior OS.

These are my thoughts only and do not represent anyone else.

Somebody was saying to me that he believed Linux was a good corporate tool
but not a good op system for home use because of it's steep learning
curve.

What do the list subscribers here think? Think Linux-Mandrake isn't ready
 for Prime Time yet?

I wonder. Are there any home users on this list?

 Thanks for any replies,

Re: [newbie] ram problem

1999-08-09 Thread Stephan Rex

Hi
It only hangs when I use "linux mem=128" at the lilo prompt. After I added
the append mem=128 to the lilo.conf file in the 2.2.9-27mdk kernel section
it boots fine but still does not detect any more than 65 meg. And no I am
not over clocking I have a genuine Intel PII 400 and 128 meg of ram.

Since posting my this list I have re-installed from the cd-rom and applied
the updated. This has made no difference. It still hangs or not detect the
ram above 65 meg.

TIA

The next step is the Ram detection, does it boot if you do not append

I updated some files yesterday, and now linux only boots to the
 command line login
prompt and not the KDE login. Some which file and what options do i
 need to change to
  fix this?

Can you get into X at all, like with startx? If that works, try
running (when logged in as root) "init 5". If that gives you the KDE
login, then change the initdefault line as Axalon suggested. If not,
 what happens?

[newbie] Ram problem fixed

1999-08-09 Thread Stephan Rex

I got a mixed bag of answers but heres what
happened

I was using a lower case m instead of a upper case
M for the ram size

Thus

at lilo prompt:
linux mem=128m should be - linux
mem=128M

or

in /etc/lilo.conf

append = mem=128m should be -  append
mem=128M

sorry to try everyone up on such a stupid
mistake.

thanks all

Re: [newbie] Module.

1999-08-07 Thread Stephan Rex

I also have similiar problems with my via-rhine dlink dfe-530 tx NIC. I have
tried
1. using the built in driver but the card can not be found by the probe
during installation
2.downloading the driver source code compiling.

after which I then configure the card and eth0 setting

All of these cause errors, usually the card can not be initialised during
bootup.

Weeks later I gave up and bought a 3com NIC and NO MORE problems.

If you decide to continue here is the source code
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/via-rhine.c
and a really good starting point for all NIC problems any brand or model.

good luck

Forward the file to Me. I can scan it. Also if it is a Virus I think
actions
need to be taken... In most cases Happy99.exe is a virus and can really
harm
your computer. It will send the virus to all the people in your Email
Address
book. So do not open it. It will then attach to your friends email address
books and attempt to do the same etc..
