[newbie] connection sharing and file sharing

2002-08-12 Thread Stojs

Hi,

I have a Mandrake 8.2 machine connected to the internet. It´s sharing
its internet connection to a win2000 machine using DHCP.

Eth1 is connected to the internet and eth0 is used for connection
sharing.

I need to access the windoze files from Linux. Do I need the Samba
server or just the client? How should I configure it?

Thanks,
Stojs

Re: [newbie] Connection sharing/samba problem

2002-06-01 Thread Stojs

OK I set it back. I do not understand much about networking, but a windows network
skilled friend is coming over. What do I need to tell him to get the configuration
right? And does anyone have a good link explaining stuff för him?

Thanks a lot/

What is best for the psu, having the computer running constantly or
turning it off everytime you don´t use it (several times a day)?

[newbie] connection sharing and network with samba

2002-03-16 Thread Stojs

I had my internet sharing working perfectly. Then I wanted to set up the firewall
using wizdrake. I ran the network wizzard like I had to before
running the firewall wizard. And when I was finnished there was no more internet
sharing.

Can I have a connection sharing not using DHCP? I only have one machine connected to
the linux box.

Or is it possible for the linux network to use the automaticly assigned ip-number from
the connection sharing?

Any suggestions on how to get my network using both connection sharing and SAMBA?

[newbie] connection sharing partly blocked

2002-03-13 Thread Stojs

I have my connection sharing working almost prefectly. The only problem
is with a windows program called "direct connect". It is a p2p program.
When I run it with windows connected directly to the internet it runs
perfectly, but connected through linux with firewall stopped it cannot
reach out to search.

Is there a way to make the linux connection sharing completely
transparent?

Thanks in advance,
Stojs

[newbie] programs running on wine

2002-03-10 Thread Stojs

I have now decided to have a go with linux. Not all the way since I
would not trust it to run 3ds max like I would like it to. I bought the
mandrake 8.1 power pack.

Is there a list anywhere of windows programs tested running wine
successfully (and not successfully)?

[newbie] Firewall and win

2002-02-22 Thread Stojs

I have a lan connection to the internet and would like to have one
smoothwall linux firewall computer connected to the internet. This
smoothwall would be connected to a mandrake linux computer wich would be
connected to a win2000 machine.

Is it possible to have the windows computer totally shut off from the
internet exept for one program (direct connect)?

If it ispossible, is it a good choice? Would it be better to have
mandrake run a firewall, and skip the smoothwall machine? Or should I
have a firewall in the windows machine instead?

Thanks in advance,
Stojs

If it is possible, how do I get there?

[newbie] filesharing with windows (samba)

2001-12-09 Thread Stojs

Now I have set up a samba server but there are still some problems.

When I click home directory I get a network icon in the left field.
Under that is ftp archive, local network and web sites. I guess my
windows machine should show up under local network. But what I get there
is just "could not connect to host localhost". Am I looking in the wrong
place or is it a configuration problem?

>From the windows side I can find the linux machine and read/write in the
samba-public folder. The problem is that I can not write in samba-public
folder from within linux. How do I share another folder? And is it
possible to get read/write access to the samba-public folder?

Thank you all for being so helpful,
Stojs

[newbie] hostname

2001-12-09 Thread Stojs

When running the server wizard from wizdrake I get stuck on hostname.
The text sais if you will only have intranet any valid name is ok, like
company.net. I tried using that name but it was not correct. Do I have
to pick a host name from somewhere else on the system? Or does my
internet connection make the wizard assume that I am trying to configure
an internet server?

What makes a hostname valid?

Do I have to use a domain name as well?

Thanks,
Stojs

[newbie] Linux to Windows connection problem

2001-12-08 Thread Stojs

Thanks a lot for the warm welcome I got on this list.

I want my linux machine connected to the internet on eth0. Eth1 I want
connected to my windows machine. At least one of them should have
read/write permission on the other. I do not wish to share the internet
connection.

The windows machine is win 2000 pro with ip 192.168.0.1 and the linux is
mandrake 8.1 with ip 192.168.0.2. They both use subnet mask
255.255.255.0.

When I ping the linux from windows I get an ok message (100% ok, 0%
dropped) but when I ping from linux it keeps on pinging forever. Does
this mean that only one of my machines is misconfigured, and if this is
the case, wich one?

Does anyone have any idea on how to fix it?

If I want only one of them to read/write on the other, could I live with
this or do I have to fix it?

Soon to be qualified to be a newbie,
Stojs
