[newbie] 3 Problems

2002-05-21 Thread Thomas Beno

1. I have Win98 SE installed on one hard drive and Mandrake Linux 8.2
on another. I had Lilo configured and was able to boot into Linux with
no problem. The problem is that when I rebooted and tried to go into
Win98, all I got was a black screen with the message Windows loading.
Windows never did load. I checked the settings in Lilo and was told by
the guy from whom I bought the CD's from that my settings were correct.
As a result the only way I can boot into Linux is with a boot disk.
Otherwise the computer boots into Windows.

2. I downloaded and installed QCad. I have tried unsuccesfully to link
the executable file from the KDE desktop. Each time I try access the
program from the desktop icon, I get a blank QCad screen with no tool
bars and I can't close the screen and have to reboot. The program boots
ok from the terminal but I would prefer to be able to access it with an
icon on the desktop.

3. Each time I boot into Linux, I get the KDE desktop but the Root
Console - Konsole opens also. Is there a way to configure the desktop
to just open without anything else opening?

Realplayer 8 for Linux will play Internet Radio. I listen to BBC 6 Music,
BBC London Live and WYYB (The Phoenix) with it.

On the download page they ask for an OS. Which one that they list would
be comparable to Mandrake Linux 8.2?

It will and I have it; however it will not decode Windows Media streams.LX

Does it give you a comparable list of available stations compared to Windows

[newbie] Problem installing Real Player 8 for Linux

2002-05-18 Thread Thomas Beno

I downloaded Real Player 8 for Linux file rp8_linux_alpha_rh62_cs1.bin
According to Linux Newbie.com all I was supposed to do was double click
on the file and it would install. Well, since it didn't, I have not
done something right or I've done something wrong. Either way, I am not
installing the program. Did I download the wrong version of the
program? Am I not using the correct procedure to install a binary file?
I would really appreciate some help with this. I am and probably will
be for some time a newbie to Linux.

[newbie] XMMS

2002-05-17 Thread Thomas Beno

OK. I got in my manual and set up XMMS, went to Shoutcast.com and
downloaded one of their site addresses and got it to play stereo on my
computer. Now, three things. Does M$ own all the radio stations
accessible with Windows Media Player? If Icecast and Cool FM are
supporting open source, why are they charging for access? And third and
last, how can I download different site addresses from Shoutcast.com so
I can listen to more than one type of music. When I picked on a
different type of music and downloaded the file, it came up as the same
identical file as the first one I had downloaded.
