[newbie] Unsubscribing?
I'm sorry I have to pass by the list, but the majordomo doesn't seem to work... Here are the errors I've encountered : -- unsubscribe newbie [EMAIL PROTECTED] unsubscribe: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' is not a member of list 'newbie'. contact "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" if you need help. -- unsubscribe newbie unsubscribe: '=?iso-8859-1?Q?Timoth=E9e_Revil?= [EMAIL PROTECTED]' is not a member of list 'newbie'. contact "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" if you need help. unsubscribe newbie Succeeded. And I still continue receiving messages... Mandrake hasn't worked on my CPU unfortunately due to some conflicts, so I've abandoned Linux until a version which is more compatible with my hardware comes out. Please unsubscribe me. Thanks, Tim
Re: [newbie] Lnx4win and installation
I had already had this problem, and it was because the desintallation had not removed the menu item in Window's config.sys... try removing it to see. Tim I am trying to install Linux Mandrake 6.1 using Lnx4win. I have got as far as completing an installation successfully(??) but with Lnx4win only allocating 400 megs of space for the image size installation (I had wanted 1 gig space). Unfortunately I got in a muddle with the password and user name and couldn't get into the final Linux system. I uninstalled Lnx4win as directed and then deleted the Lnx4win directory but on reinstalling Lnx4win, I can not get Lnx4win to set up the Linux image file and swap file so the installation fails. (Under the setup it asks if I am ready to boot under Linux and then when started crashes with the following error message: **Preparing Loopback device **Kernel panic:VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:21 I find two text files in the Lnx4win directory which contain the proposed sizes for the Linux file and swap file I have chosen from the menu, but the installation program doesn't format them. This suggests that there is something that the uninstall routine has failed to remove properly which (without the formation of the Linux file and swap) is preventing Linux Mandrake from installing. Anyone have any thoughts?? I've been itching to try Linux but I am very frustrated getting so close to installation without succeeding. Thanks. Craig Joly
Re: [newbie] Lnx4win
I recently installed Linux on an empty partition but was disappointed to learn that I have a winmodem and thus cannot use Linux exclusively. So I decided to play with Lnx4win. Just by the way, Lnx4win doesn't make non-compatible hardware any more compatible... it is just an easy way to install Linux (or supposed to be...) Tim
[newbie] psaux and keyboard locking up
It seems I have a common problem which has no solution... I have a Diamond V770 and a PS/2 mouse, a MouseMan+PS/2 to be exact. I can't set my mouse with either XF86Setup or xf86config under either RedHat 6.0 or Mandrake 6.1. I have seen that many people are writing to this list with the same problem... Does anyone have or know about a way to fix this bug? Looking on the web, I found an old message (1998) with the same problem on 2.0.34... Should I try downloading the new development kernels (is there something new in them?), even if I don't know much or anything about Linux. Thanks, Tim I've been on this problem sooo long now, it's starting to get annoying! Hehe...
Re: [newbie] psaux and keyboard locking up
My mouse is a PS/2, but isn't that configured under psaux in linux?? PS/2 mice use IRQ 12, well at least mine does ;) And my PS/2 mouse port seems to be enabled because while linux is loading, I see PS/2 mouse port detected, and mouseconfig tells me "Mouse found on PS/2 port".. but when I enable it, that's when my keyboard jams... It might be due to an IRQ conflict, because somebody else had this problem and also had a Diamond V770 on their machine... But then again, my Diamond V770 is using IRQ 11... Is Linux having problems with two IRQs too close?? Tim psaux??? Not familiar with that config. Are you using serial or PS/2 mouse? Or are you trying to use a PS/2 mouse with a serial adapter? AFAIK, serial and PS/2 are the only options you have, and trying to use PS/2 with an adapter doesn't work well for most people. Sounds like you've got a serious IRQ conflict somewhere... Are you trying to use your serial mouse in a comm port that's in use by your internal modem or anything, by any chance? Do you have a PS/2 mouse port and have it enabled in BIOS by any chance? IIRC, that MAY share an IRQ with one of your serial ports... don't recall off hand what IRQ PS/2 mouse tries to use... John
Re: [newbie] MS Intellimouse, X Windows, and problems...
I have exactly the same configuration, but for me, I can't even set my mouse without my computer freezing.. I tried many different ways to fix it, without any luck. If you ever succeed in configuring it, please post how you did it!! Thanks, Tim I have a Diamond Viper V770 TNT 2 video card that I successfully installed the drivers for, which I am very proud of, since it was my first mod of linux. However, now that I have 1280x1024x32bpp resolution in X, I don't have a mouse that is working properly. What it is doing is as you move the mouse around, it is getting button press signals all over the place and popping all over the upper-left corner of the screen. I have played around with the settings in XF86Config to point the mouse device as /dev/mouse and /dev/psaux. I have also used the "Intellimouse" and "PS/2" mouse types. What is interesting about this problem is that when I had a more typical video card and the install figured out exactly what to set, the mouse worked great in X. Could it be an interrupt conflict? Has anyone else seen this problem...? Thanks, Dave
[newbie] Keyboard and mouse freezing on loading
My keyboard and mouse freeze when Linux loads... During the installation everything works fine, but as soon as it does the test for the video card, I can't use my keyboard anymore... Anybody have a solution? Thanks, Tim
