[newbie] ISDN modem and firewalling rec
Hello All, I need an ISDN modem recommendation - never dealt with this before. I have implemented several cable firewalls without any significant difficulties. the small company i am employed with is required to have ISDN access per a Government contract they have, that's why. Which modem would you recommend? Internal with a regular firewall on Linux with internal LAN connected to a NIC? Or there's a modem with a hub/switch and a firewalling built in? how painful is ISDN on Linux in general, if any? we are located in Washington State. US West Communications is our phone Co. thank you very much in advance -- Best regards, Yuri http://linukh.freeservers.com

Re: [newbie] OT - Quake
I've heard there's a download of Quake available for Linux and I would like to try it out - could someone point me to where to find it (hopefully RPMS) and let me know what to copy? I've never played it before but it looks cool. sorry, can not help you on this one, just wanted to butt in with my Railroad Tycoon II recommendation. Even my Quake playing son stopped playing Quake. RT2 is absolutely addictive. I paid $35 at Fry's, but I am sure you can find it cheaper to zero G. If you chose to install it, deselect "movies" option in install menu. There were minor video issues on my old box: PD440FX with 233PII, 128 MB RAM. Matrox Mystique (4MB) Hitachi 803 (21" -53cm) it corrected itself on the second run. Newer boxes ran it without a hitch. best, Y __ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Messenger. http://im.yahoo.com
[newbie] Partition confusion
Could someone point me to The Ultimate Guide on HDD partitioning, please? My point: I come across notions to make root partition as small as possible, 80-120 Mb being as more than generous amount, etc. yet when I try to install I get messages that my root partition is too small for the packages i chose. I understand, that this topic is an eternal one, but I need to crarify it. TIA, Y __ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Messenger. http://im.yahoo.com

As far as I know, Linux recognizes several processors. Paul Can anybody shed some light on how well it utilises SMP? There are several systems that claim supoort, but are there any benchmarks that prove that it's something that an average user should look into? I ask about it, because I just recently read an article hailing IBM's decision to announce yet another Linux boosting decision to ship some hardware with Caldera, RedHat and TurboL. and in a commentary by some IBM tech boss there was a line that they were reluctant to take this step because Linux allegedly was not a star when it comes to SMP. The article was about a week ago on WideOpen.com. or this was just a CEO-speak? TIA __ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Messenger. http://im.yahoo.com
