[newbie] farewell for now!

2000-01-01 Thread chris wakefield

Hi everyone:
Although things haven't been at their best recently on your list, I have
enjoyed it. Thanks John Aldrich for your help. I remade everything 3
times on different disks! nothing worked. Still could be the sequence.
I'm going with the distro as it is and do fixes and rpm stuff as I go
along. My local group (Victoria, B.C., Canada) didn't have much success
with the boot disks either. By the way, John, you're right about list
usage, I should have just read the mail only. Thanks so much to
everybody and best wishes for you in this new year!
Chris W.

Re: [newbie] boot disk image prob.

1999-12-31 Thread chris wakefield

Happy New Year Greetings Axalon:
Just sent this to a member of my local linux users group. Been working
many hours trying to do this!

Hi alan:
Thanks for your private reply.
I tried what you suggested and RedHat still loads Gnome (which is
beginning to grow on me).
This is the sequence that I used.
1. Downl. boot-RHEA-1999_044 from:
http://www.redhat.com/support/errata/RHEA1999045-01.html
2. rawrite the image file to a flop.
3. bios priority a: first
4. left the boot flop. in a: and cd in cdrom and ctrl-alt-del
5. linux boots, I enter: 'text' then hit enter ((even though the RedHat
site says: linux updates (install stops))
6. Gnome comes up.
From the site:
When booting into the anaconda installation program, type "linux
updates"
at the boot prompt, followed by any other installation options
which are
required (such as "expert" or "text"). The installation process
will prompt
you to insert the updates disk when it is required, and the
install will then
   proceed as normal.
That does not work. inputing "linux updates" stops the install and
there are no prompt for "text" or "expert"! Unless you enter "text"
first, then you will get gnome.

I remember earlier in text installs (I've been working on it almost half
a day) I remember seeing: insert update disk or something like that, but
I can't seem to recreate the sequence. I'm going to try a straight
install from cd again to see if it comes up. I'm pretty sure I've done
all the sequences, but I still could be missing something.

I'll keep you posted
Chris W.
Happy New Year.

[newbie] x-server problem

1999-12-29 Thread chris wakefield

Hi all:
I'm arbitrarily out of linux for the moment. My Distro's mc or bash#
won't see my DOS partition. Has unformatted "empty space" on the drive
at the moment (maybe that's why?) Had to use windoze to download
xsis.tgz from suSE site to get my distro up and running. Can't get
xf86config (or XF86Setup for that matter) to set up my x-server. I think
the commands are:
#tar xzvf /dir/filename -C/usr/X11R6
The problem:
xsis.tgz is in DOS
tried:
#tar xzvf /DOS/xsis.tgz -C/usr/X11R6 and won't recognize DOS.
Any help would be appreaciated, Chris.

[newbie] ques. re: downloading ftp folders

1999-12-22 Thread chris wakefield

Hi!
Could someone please help me configure Netvampire3.3 to download a
directory or folder of files. Currently I only get a "listing" of the
huge file. I can't believe that I have to individually download 1000
files one at a time! I understand from your FAQ file that it has
something to do with the "path" being added to the URL. I my case the
URL of the directory is:

ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/linux/distributions/mandrake/Mandrake/RPMS/

The next level up in the directory has 3 folders at:

ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/linux/distributions/mandrake/Mandrake/

The only option that seems availiable is:

ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/linux/distributions/mandrake/Mandrake/RPMS/AfterStep-1.7.111-7mdk.i586.rpm

and there is about 1000 to 2000 of these that I need!
Thanks Chris.
