Re: [newbie] System mode autologin
Roman Korcek wrote: Hi, I've just installed Mandrake Linux 9.0 and I am quite impressed. I just have one problem, when I try to configure autologin in Mandrake control center to start up IceWM instead of the KDE that I initially picked the changes do not stick. When I reboot the machine it continues to load up KDE even though the system mode desktop I have selected shows IceWM. Is there a config file that I can edit? Any help would be much appreciated. I think it's like this because you're most probably using the K login manager and if it's configured for autologin to KDE then it doesn't care about any MDK autologin settings. You first need to go into the K Control Center, disable the autologin feature from there, save/quit, start MCC and configure the new autologin settings. -- HTH Roman Thanks for the Relpy Roman I checked my settings in the K Control Center, but what I found was the autologin was already disabled. I then checked to see if my settings in MCC were still as I left them and they were. I'm not sure what I'll do next, maybe a fresh installation and select Gnome, IceWM or Windowmaker and see what happens. A fresh installation will have to wait until I have more time, unless I find a solution to my problem. Thanks again Steve Mazil Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] SiS 735 chipset/ecs k7s5a
Based on what civileme wrote about the other sis chipsets being the most linux friendly I would think that the sis 735 has a good chance at working with Mandrake trouble free. Linux on the Nivida Nforce http://www.tech-report.com/onearticle.x/2599 that could be questionable.. Steve M. Well I have just ordered one of the ECS k7s5a motherboards today. It should arrive by Friday. At £57 it is nearly half of the price of the Gigabyte AMD760 board I had previously ordered. I'll let you know how it shakes out. The consensus view on the Forum thread on Anandtech is that the performance of the board is stunning, especially with the latest BIOS update, but that it can not be overclocked too much. The old Bios was vulnerable to the card failing to boot with certain bus/memory settings. I should have Mandrake running on it by the weekend :) On Wednesday 29 August 2001 9:23 am, you wrote: On Tuesday 28 August 2001 11:04 pm, hosey escribió: I read an interesting review on the SiS 735 chipset and how it outperforms the AMD 760 at http://www6.tomshardware.com/mainboard/01q2/010611/ , I then checked to see if there were any Duron/Athlon motherboards manufactured with the SiS 735 chipset and I came across one made by ECS at http://www.ecs.com.tw/products/k7s5a.htm. I'm planning on putting together a new machine for myself and I was wondering if anyone had any insight on this chipset and if anybody has had any experience with ECS motherboards and whether I should consider this motherboard/chipset combination. Up until now, all SiS products have had a poor reputation. Tom's article alludes to this. It wouldn't be the first time tho a company has turned things around and got on the ball. Also the only ECS boards on AMD's approved list use either the VIA or ALi chipsets. It could be they just haven't tested SiS chipset boards tho. They never say why or why not boards are approved. So, I believe I'd wait until there's several months real world experience with the SiS 735 chipset, and with ECS motherboards. As I've said before also, I believe AMD approval is an important factor in mboard / chipset choice. The ECS board also has a useless AMR (winmodem) slot, and no ISA slot. At least for me, that would make it a poor choice. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
