Re: [newbie] Unix lessons; was:[ Oh, yeah]

1999-07-27 Thread jsm

I think that " lessons " would be great for this list . After all it is a
newbie list . And I don't really understand half of what I read on this list
anyhow . Is there a " new newbie " list somewhere ? Am I really this far behind
the rest of the class ?

jsm

BTW...it seems like many of the books that I've seen take for granted that you
have more knowledge about Linux than I have . And I'm not new to computers (
just Linux ) . I'm the one that everyone in my family calls when they have
problems with there Windows systems !

Hmmm. Glad it helped. Maybe we should do some quickie Unix-command-line
intro lessons online. QUESTION: should it be on this list, or would it be
better to start a new, separate maillist? Or should we just try a few easy
lessons, and see how it goes, with the option to move elsewhere later?

 What say, everyone?

Oh, please do. I feel like I'm in remedial school anyway. Damn, there
should have been basic *nix classes required for every major at my Univ.
They just told us how to do the bare minimum in the computer lab. I guess
they didn't want us to be dangerous.

[newbie] Cable modem info ?

1999-07-26 Thread jsm

Can someone point me to some info on getting a cable modem to work with
Linux ?
I'll be getting it installed in 2 days , but Adelphia does not install
to Linux . So I must let them install to Win98 . I'll have to configure
it to work in Mandrake myself .

Thanks !

If the /boot partition is created in the install program, then install will put
all the files necessary in that partition. It shows up as a directory off of the
root directory (which it is) but is also a seperate partition.
The best way to do it is when in install and asked to set up partitions, then
set up the /boot partition first. I just used 20 mb it is adequate enough.
then I set up the swap partition, I just went with 127 mb probably overkill
since I have 128 mb memory but better safe than sorry :)
Then I set up my remaining space as a / partition (root) , I did not create any
 other partitions though many do.

I hope this is of some use to you,

Thanks for the help ! I did try that , but LILO still would not install . So as a
last resort I went to my motherboard manufacture and found a flash for my bios (
what else could it be , right ? ) . After the upgrade I'm glad to report that
everything works fine !!! I now can boot to Linux or Windows with LILO . I guess
there was a defect in my BIOS program .

Thanks !!!

I guess I'm too new at this ! But I keep seeing references to " boot to single
user mode " . What is it ? How and why would you want to ?

Thanks

Hi all , I've just bought a Cannon BJC2000 printer . I cant get it to
print in Linux . When I set it up , I used the BJC600 or above choice .
When I try to print nothing happens .

Also , when I run sndconfig it recognizes my card ( ATZ1023 ) but when I
chose ok it freezes the whole computer , no mouse no keyboard , nothing
. I have to use the reset button to reboot . And Im afraid it's going to
destroy the file system !

Any help would be greatly appreciated !

Yes. (At least you can read CDs from any IDE DVD drive, haven't tried
reading actual DVDs. They aren't available around here.)

or a Turtle Beach Montego pnp sound card are supported by Mandrake 6.x?

Do you know which chipset it's based on? Turtle Beach Classic, Tahiti,
Monterey, Pinnacle and Fiji are supported; it's not entirely unlikely one
of these drivers will work on the Montego, as well.

The Montego has a Vortex chipset .

Anyone know who has the box set in south Florida ?

I read the review earlier and thought it very good. I just saw this boxed
Mandrake set at Costco for $29.99 Canadian. You can't hardly get an update
OS disk from Microsoft for that kind of money. This should lure a number of
people who have never really heard of Linux to try it out. I am a Newbie but
find Mandrake 6.0 easy to install and I downloaded most of the updates from
mirror sites without any trouble. The three electronic books in the box are
not recent but should have the basic stuff. I think I read the Sam's book
from the local library and thought it was the most helpful one I had come
 across as a beginner.

Just read a review of Mandrake 6.0 that is being distributed by Macmillan
Publishing over at http://www.cpureview.com/rev_mndk6_a.html . You guys
might enjoy the read. Mandrake gets high marks.
.. I recommend everyone to buy
the boxed edition when possible to support your favorite Distro. Thanks for
all the great support on this list!!
