[newbie] OpenOffice - Database Section

2005-02-15 Thread linuxgirlie
Hi,

Some of you may of heard of this via other mailing lists, but we need
help raising money for the database section of OpenOffice in version
2.0. This may not be that important for end users, but is a major
function needed for UK schools as most will not leave Microsoft Office
without it. (Microsoft Access is highly imbedded into the curriculum
here). We need to get Microsoft Office out of UK schools and this is
the only way we will be able to make it possible!!

For more information see:

http://hsqldb.sourceforge.net/web/openoffice.html

Many Thanks,

Jo

Re: [newbie] SUSE Pro 9.2 vs. Mandrake 10.1

2005-01-24 Thread linuxgirlie
Mandrake 10.1 comes with Opera on the dvd disk. Though it could be as
I have the powerpack version ;)

SuSe isn't as cutting edge as Mandrake--the upside--most stuff works without
hassles. Because it is cutting edge, things sometimes don't work as they are
 supposed to in Mandrake.
Mandrake has far better configuration tools (IMO). Yast still sucks.
SuSe has some pretty serious hardware requirements--I can get Mandrake to run
fast (with KDE) on a P300. SuSe won't, and I can't figure out why--it is
just slow. On the other hand, the Debian 2.6.7 kernel runs fine (KDE) on a
 P233.
If you want to get more than just a basic system you need SuSe Pro. The
download Demo disk is pretty basic.

Re: [newbie] winmodems

2005-01-11 Thread linuxgirlie
I agree get a router, and if you have more than one computer get a 4 port.

Though be careful what they say on the boxes, our dsl router broke, so
we went out to buy one, and ended up with something you put between
your modem and your computer, the box said asdl router, but it wasn't
that. Second time lucky and it works perfectly...funny enough that
also said adsl router on the box!!!

I dont know why but this sounds so familiar... Yuck.

There are some USB ADSL modems that will work with Linux such as the Alcatel
 SpeedTouch.
But the bad news is that they rely on proprietary drivers and like all
proprietary drivers there is no guarantee that they will be maintained in the
future and will work with all kernels.

If you have the choice I would strongly recommend getting an Ethernet
connected single port ADSL modem/router. The price is much the same as a USB
ADSL modem, and it will not need any driver at all. Just an Ethernet port on
 your computer.

Re: [newbie] KDE upgrade

2005-01-01 Thread linuxgirlie
I installed KDE 3.3 bu doing the following:

Copy all the KDE files into /tmp
Login as root (for some reason there is a bug, may have been fixed
now) that won't allow you to add media under other users.
Go to Mdkc Control Centre (configure your computer) and add new
media...eg the folder with kde in it.
Once this is done go to install software
Type in KDE
Look for all the files with 3.3.* (* being your version)
Add them, with a tick

Click install.

Sorry if this is to basic, just trying to put it in some sort of
understandable order!!

In Mandrake 10.1 Official, I am trying to upgrade KDE to KDE3.3 which
is on disk4 of the Download Edition. But my attempts have been a
complete failure. I have tried everything that I can think of, using
urpmi. None work. :( I also can't get Install Packages to find the
new KDE on disk4. Tried all sorts of add media as well.

So, PLEASE someone, in plain language, how does one install KDE3.3
 from disk4? I don't need to keep KDE3.2. I can't find the answer in
 twiki or the archives.

Very many thanks for any help.

I tried it with Mozilla and without popups, to test and it said no
netscape allowed. So I don't think that is his problem.

Out of curiosity I tried it with Mozilla under 10.0, and it said that it could
not work with popups blocked. Is this relevant to you?

Re: [newbie] Can't run MySql

2004-12-20 Thread linuxgirlie
You need to have mysql running in the first place.

You can either:

Go to Mandrake Control Centre, --- Services --- and turn Mysql on or
you can type:

/etc/init.d/mysql start

in the console.
