 Thanks!

The fan isn't actually squeeking, it's more like vibrating--not quite so
much as those quarter-fed beds in an hourly motel, more like a sex toy, if
you know what I mean (Ooops, this might get too suggestive!)

I do have a backup power supply if I need to change it, but that one makes
almost as much noise. I'll probably clean both out, and try the
'drop-o-oil'
on them to see how it goes.

Didn't know anything about checking fan motors and bearings
before...thanks
for the info! But, I kinda' figured a power supply without a fan would
feel
a bit unhappy--which is why I didn't just cut the wires to the fan (which
has crossed my mind on occasion!). :-)

  Greg,
Mark's advice is good. And do it now while the fan is still
 squeeking.
This won't work once the fan seizes, which is coming soon. When seized
 you
will probably want to replace it. [*speaking of computer chassis from
 here
down*] It: it's normally easier and better to replace the entire power
supply rather than the fan inside. Once the fan has quit there are lots
 of
reliability questions that have to be considered.
And anytime you have the case open and the machine off, check the
CPU
fan. Do not remove the CPU fan and heatsink unit unless you are
replacing
 it
or are prepared to redo dried heat-sink compound you might find beneith
it
 (a
GOOD idea). It should turn so freely that when spun it locates to the
magnetic poles of the motor [also a good test of a new CPU fan to find
ball-bearing type fans]. If it doesn't locate try one carefully placed
 drop
of 3in1 oil to free it (after cleaning, of course). Note that a
sleeve-bearing motor won't "notch" with this test. If it won't, then
 replace
it (ball-bearing motors are much more reliable). And, of course, blow
out
the CPU heat sink, if not replaced, with canned air as part of the
 internal
  clean up. -Gary-

 performing

 Hi,
To speed up seti in Windoze you have to change the setting on the
screen saver to blank out the screen. I think it's in the advanced
settings. All that graph drawing the screen saver uses up tons of
 resources.
Even with that Mandrake 7.0 is about 2 hours quicker (16 vs. 18) per

Do I need to adjust something or does it just take a long time for
applications to startup using a window manager (KDE/GNOME). I've got my
swap set for 256MB. I figured I have a pretty strong machine
(PII400/128MB)
but linux is just dogging it. I was thinking about getting a second
machine
somewhat smaller (PII266/64MB) but at this point I can't believe that it
would be useful as a desktop...

Also, is this just a bad habit I picked from the windows world or does it
bug y'all too when you think you clicked to start an application but
nothing
happens then after a while you realize that your mouse click wasn't
successful so you try clicking a again.

It takes so long for these apps to startup, I wish that there was a "wait"
cursor to let me know that I did successfully start the application and
then
I can go about my business until it finally comes up.

Interesting. I had heard that the swap should be twice the physical RAM.

I've just RTFM for Mandrake (6.5) and it says on page 23:

"In Linux, partitions of type SWAP cannot be bigger than 128Mb. If you
wish
to use more swap, you should create several. Too much space allocated to
swap will always be useless. In general, it is considered that for a RAM
memory of less then 64Mb, you should have 128Mb of swap. For RAM memory
greater than 64Mb, 80Mb of swap is sufficient."

Personally, I have always gone for twice the RAM.

of
  the
box. If you still feel up for a project here is what I did in a
nutshell to get my Gforce working.

 A. Your gonna have to upgrade to XFree4.01
 .5 Almost forgot ... mv /etx/X11 and /usr/X11 to /etc/X11-old and
 /usr/X11-old
 1. goto www.xfree86.org and download Xinstall.sh and extract
 2. take a look at the readme files while your there
 3. run 'sh Xinstall.sh' then download the correct binaries
 4. install the binaries
 5. run /usr/X11/bin/xf86config ... be sure to have your monitor
  manual
 handy

 B. Install the Nvidia drivers
 1. Install the both rpm's ... no sweat here. I had to --nodeps
one
  of
 them.

 C. Tweak XF86Config
 1. Refer to the faq at Nvidia under linux drivers
 2. I recall having to uncomment the glx line under modules
 3. Had to change the driver from nv to nvidia

voila ... your done for now. I'm just leaving my machine on
inittab 3
for now. Whenever I want to play a game I simply 'startx' and run
the
game from inside of twm which seems to be more stable then before
I
  had
a Nvidia card. Incedently, I'm also getting fairly significantly
  higher
frame rates under this setting then under WinME.

First, do us all a favor and set your email client to wrap outgoing
messages at 72 characters or less. Thanks. If your new to Linux and
not comfortable working from a command line then forget about it for
right now. I don't think any distro currently has support for Nvidia
"built in". That may have already changed with the release Red Hat 7
though. I'm sure Mandrake 7.2 will also support Nvidia cards out of the
box. If you still feel up for a project here is what I did in a
nutshell to get my Gforce working.

 A. Your gonna have to upgrade to XFree4.01
 .5 Almost forgot ... mv /etx/X11 and /usr/X11 to /etc/X11-old and
 /usr/X11-old
 1. goto www.xfree86.org and download Xinstall.sh and extract
 2. take a look at the readme files while your there
 3. run 'sh Xinstall.sh' then download the correct binaries
 4. install the binaries
 5. run /usr/X11/bin/xf86config ... be sure to have your monitor manual
 handy

 B. Install the Nvidia drivers
 1. Install the both rpm's ... no sweat here. I had to --nodeps one of
 them.

 C. Tweak XF86Config
 1. Refer to the faq at Nvidia under linux drivers
 2. I recall having to uncomment the glx line under modules
 3. Had to change the driver from nv to nvidia

voila ... your done for now. I'm just leaving my machine on inittab 3
for now. Whenever I want to play a game I simply 'startx' and run the
game from inside of twm which seems to be more stable then before I had
a Nvidia card. Incedently, I'm also getting fairly significantly higher
frame rates under this setting then under WinME.

[newbie] How do i update hardrake?

2000-09-24 Thread markOpoleO

I tryed to update my Hardrake from the "old" one with MD 7.1 and it said it
required the other 2 files you download from mandrake website. But, the
files it required were in the same directory, each one keep saying it needed
the other one. I don't recall the file names, but they are on the Hardrake
webpage. Any idea?

I had previously posted a response to your question. You either did
not
see it or choose to ignore it, so I will try 1 more time.

I have an Actiontec PCI modem. In Windows the modem is on Comm5, in
Linux the modem is Comm4, ttyS3. THERE IS NO ttyS4.
If you will enter the proper set-serial commands you should have no
problem getting your modem to work in kppp as ttyS3.
If you continue to insist on trying to set-up your modem using a
value
that does not exist then you need to go out now to your nearest computer
store and buy an external modem, because you will NEVER be able to get
your
 PCI modem to work

I assume you are coming from a windows environment

Things are just a little bit different and normally
number from 0 (zero) and up

Linux also has four (and even more) ports.
They are number 0 to 3 which is the same as 1 to 4

 Remember Com1 = ttyS0
   Com2 = ttyS1
   Com3 = ttyS2
 and Com4 = ttyS3

Do you have the Bios set to read CDROM, C, SCSI? It sounds like you are
still booting from the main Hard drive. If you don't know how to get in
bios just hold down the delete key when the computer is first booting up
like when it is reading ram, primary master, secondary master etc. Some
motherboards want you to hold down a different key so instead of delete
hit the Pause key on your keyboard and look at the bottom of the screen.
It should tell you down there somewhere to hit "somekey" to enter setup.
Once in bios the configuration for boot up is in the "Bios features
setup". You will see a selection "boot sequence" arrow down to that and
hit the keyboard Plus key (the one next to the Number pad group) and
change the setting to CDROM etc as shown at the begining of this post.
Once you have changed hit esc key and then F10, Y for yes and "enter"
key, the computer will start booting and you should have the CD in.
This should start you into the installation program and your off and
running. Sorry if I have included more info here than you needed but I
couldn't tell from your post if you knew all of the above. Luck, Dennis

Yes, the sentence "How much faster is it going to be at 800mhz or even

not a

| 20 gigs is ample room for 2 OSes or more. is there a reason you don't
| want to partition the main drive? are you only running windows now?

| Absolutely, you can easily add 4 OSs on a 20 gig drive.

[newbie] How do i go about doing a MD7.1 install on 2nd drive

2000-08-21 Thread markOpoleO

I just got the 7.1 Inst and Ext CD in mail, I built a new computer was was
going to get a second hardrive to put linux on and keep the other for
windows (for games of course). How would I got about making it so when i
turn on computer I get a option to go into Linux or windows? The way I
understood it was LILO and Grub were just for Partions on 1 drive..is this
correct or would i still use them with the seond drive?

Thanks,

| Nope, I'm not using your provider. But this is the first I hear of a
| cablemodem having a MAC address, too, so you could be right. It's either
an
| extra EEPROM chip in the cablemodem or some such piece of equipment if
thats
| the case. With mine, you need to contact them if you change your NIC. Then
| they scan your system, get the MAC, and your back up. Here, it's actually
| the MAC address that ID's you to them, and then they can connect you. It's
| probably the same 4 U, but as you say, the address comes from your
| cablemodem. Hmmm,..you just never know, do ya?

|
| The first thing to remember is that you MUST use that network card !
| Each
| network card ( No matter who built it ), has a distinct MAC ( Machine
| Access
| Code )and it is how your ISP identifies your computer when you're
| connecting.
|
| Are you sure this is necessary? I've changed NICs three times since I've
| gotten my cable modem (configuration screwey-ness), and nothing
| detrimental
| has happened to me... Actually, the MAC address that was recorded on the
| optonline website was that of the *cable modem* not a NIC! Are you
| positive
| it's not just a quirk of your particular cable provider? (unless you're
| with
| optonline also.)

Each
| network card ( No matter who built it ), has a distinct MAC ( Machine
| Access
| Code ). That code is only used on your card. It is not transferrable to
| another card and it is how your ISP identifies your computer when you're
| connecting. I just learned this the hard way 2 days ago. There is almost
| nothing to configure in Mandrake. Go to Drakconf, Network Configuration,
| find your NIC (Network Interface Card). You don't need to put anything
in
| for Host Name + Domain, or Alias. Make sure that the "Enabled" button is
| turned on (Pushed in), and make sure that you've selected DHCP as well.
| That
| should do it. You can also enter your DNS numbers which you will find on
| your ISP's web-site. If you have all of that configured, everything
should
| be fine. Make sure that you have not enabled ADSL, PPPOE, or ISDN
anywhere
| is Drakconf. At the worst, you may want to reboot, just to make sure
| everything is O.K.
|
| That's all.

|
| Hi,
| I have installed Linux Mandrake 7.0 on my computer.
| I would like to configure my internetconnection using a cable modem.
| The only information to do so that I found concerns Mandrake 6.0
| This tells me to go to control panel, select network configuration (of
| course),
| and then select interfaces.
| But the network configuration panel of Mandrake 7.0 gives me no such
| option.
| I get the options: Basic host information, Name server specifications,
| Routings and gateways, Host name search path, NIS, IPX interface and
| PPP/SLP/PIP.
| Can somebody help me?

| Now i know that this is not very usall, that is why i am going to tell you
all.
| Right now we all know how windoze has better hardware support than linux,
well have
| something to tell you. When i install windoze on my p.c I have to use the
keyboard
| for every thing, because it does not see my mouse. Mandrake 7.1 does see
my mouse
| at setup. WOW!!
|
| I have the microsoft inteleye mouse which is usb. (youm know the £50 one
with 5
| buttons and a little laser)
|
| So yes linux is wining,
