Anne I would echo that. John And I would add, the Mandrake toolkit does some stuff that no other distro can match. I can't live without Menudrake and Fontdrake, and last time I installed RH (7.x or something), I had to download CUPS -- absolutely the best printer management/configuration system I've ever used. I've used Debian (started with it, and apt get is even better than urpmi but a dearth of config tools there), a couple of different Caldera's (o.k. distro, actually, but bare bones), a couple of Suse releases (very good, but always a generation behind Mandrake), Corel (don't go there), RH 5,6,7 (installer still sucks, after all these years, and the RH menu structure is completely illogical to me) and every Mandrake from 7.0 to 8.2, including the 486 version of 7 (I don't use 9.0 because I really, really like 8.2, and everything I have works flawlessly with it -- and I probably won't install 9.0-- the next upgrade of kde may spur me to move to the next version of 9 though). And Knoppix, which is really cool to just play around with or to check to see if a computer's hardware is linux compatible. I've also installed Mandrake on several friends machines and it must be easy to use because they are still friends (and they rarely use Windows for anything, any more). e Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? btw, i'm looking for actual comparisions about what are the features that you like about it, not just flat out oppinions that mandrake rocks. i hope that this isn't too off topic. Well, first of all, Mandrake 7.1 was my first Linux download. Besides that, i had three other discs (obtained from magazines and comdex etc. ) Debian, TurboLinux Workstation, and Slackware. Guess which one was the only that configured my video card correctly? That's right. Mandrake did. Then i was able to give Linux a first try. I had a winmodem at that time, so i was unable to use the net from Linux.. So in the end, there was no much i could do with it, and my experience with Mandrake 7 was no more that a breef game. After some time, i got an ADSL connection. Mdk 8.0 was already available. I downloaded it (my internet connection worked this time) and i liked it. From that moment on, i never even attempted to try anything else. Mandrake does what i want it to. It evolves quickly (each new version feels nicer and faster than the previous one) it has it's famous control center from which i can set up nearly everything (and the best part of this, is that after the installation, i *don't need* to configure anything except for some services i might want to disable), and a lot of packages are available for it. To summarize, Mandrake was the only distro that was friendly enough for me to start fiddling with it, and once i did, i was hooked. Ah, and last but not least, as time went by and i learned more about mandrakesoft, these lists, and the people in it, i developed warm feelings for the whole thing... I just feel good in here. Damian What Damian said goes for me, although I was able to start back in the 6.x's (the last one, can't remember which one that was) I had a internal hard modem and Mandrake was the first one to find it and give me xwindows. I know little about programming and Caldera and RH didn't work for me. Once I started with Mandrake I just stuck here. I have tried some of the other new ones, like ELX and that was like reverting back a couple of generations of Mandrake or three. The Mandrake Command Center and Webmin work for me. I have cable modem and that was a snap to set up even though my provider is not a linux supporter. I didn't need their help. I am very comfortable here as well and intend to stay. -- Dennis M. linux user # 180842 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
Re: [newbie] [OT] why mandrake?
Hi my 2 cents I started out with Redhat 6 at work and upgraded to 6.2 At home I kept upgrading Redhat until the 7 series when I tried debian, a distro which looked amazing but which required to much time to install. I then tried SuSe but just plain didn't like it. The gui, the installation, I never got my internet connection working. I tried a 7 something version of Mandrake but it didnn't recognize my hardware. I windozed for a bit then I tried Corel oh boy a good idea that just didn't deliver. They hid all the tools and I had hardware problem after hardware problem. But I liked the ease of use and not being afraid to have the video setup easy to do. I installed a 8 version Mandrake and really liked it everything seemed to work wow. but because I really wanted to learn debian I installed Potato. I banged my head for a couple of months, and finally realized I was missing basic functions I needed so as soon as Mandrake 9.0 came out I installed. I still experience some hardware related problems but once I junk supermount life is great. I can't get my usb printer working but I see that redhat et al has the same problems. I am waiting for the next version (and not printing) which I hope will have solved some of these problems. The interface and tools in MD are just great.
