The Wireless card in the first choice won't work in Linux. Not supported by Intel. A company called Linuxant has something called the driverloader that will let you use a WinXP driver with it, but it costs $20 and is closed source. I have tried it and it does work. IBM seems to be one of the more Linux friendly machines. I have a T41 and got everything going quite easily. I personally would not buy Compaq because they do so many non-standard things with their hardware, making it hard to do nonstandard things like install Linux :-). I may be wrong, but from what I read when I bought my T41, lots of people seemed to have lots of problems with Compaq and Toshiba and Linux. The Pentium-M is also nice. the 1.4 is about the equivalent of a 2.2MHz P4 and the 1.6MHz is more like a 2.4-2.5. One of the main advantages is low power consumption. If you want you machine to go a long time on the battery, the Pentium-M is the way to go. have you looked at http://www.linux-laptop.net for info? Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com I'm running off of a Dell Inspiron 4150, I've had no prolems. Other than a few routine _fixable_ or known issues with most laptops... ACPI support is one. I still can't plug-in/un-plug my power nor can I close the lid, so to speak. Without Linux freezing. But apparently those two issues are completely fixable, there are a couple of mailing lists and forums, specifically, for linux on laptops... some informational websites ect ect I'm sure if you google the laptops names that you are choosing from you will find a couple of people that maintain that same type of install that you do or that you plan to do. I was lucky enough to contact someone that had the exact same laptop and is a Linux power user of sorts. He helped me greatly.
