Re: [newbie] Can´t install on Dell XPS 180n
I have been using Linux for about 6 months, so I have some knowledge about how things work. Although I do not consider myself as an expert user. The answer is yes, I did the floppy using rawrite.exe. I know that both the CD:s (1 and 2) and the floppy work because I did an install last week on an Athlon box that I have, without any problems. Ok, some info about this machine: -Dell XPS 180n, a Pentium Pro machine at 180Mhz with 98 MB RAM. -Matrox Mystique 220 4 MB RAMDAC -Creative SB32 -HD(1) IDE IBM-DAQA-33240 (Master) -HD (2) IDE WDC-AC31600H That makes a total diskspace of about 4.5 GB. Both harddrives are clean, nothing on them. I had win98 working great, but decided to remove it, making space for Mandrake. The filesystem on both are FAT32 right now after format. I flashed the motherboard with the latest driver, while I had win98 and it worked great. No problems there. My idea is to make this a Linux box only, so all the space is going to Linux. I have been removing hardware to see if the install would kick in, but no result there. I got no clue about what is wrong. Some help is needed. /Edvard (Kaj, I don´t mind that you posted it to the list. I thought I already had?) _s_p_r_a_y_ Här börjar Internet! RE:Re: [newbie] Can´t install on Dell XPS 180n
Hejsan Kaj! Now the problem I have is that I get nothing but a black screen. No promt no nothing. Just when I boot the machine and pass the HD detection, the machine starts reading the floppy, but I do not get the Mandrake screen or a prompt. I just lose the monitor, the monitor gets ofline, it gets no signal from the computer. I tried anyway and typed linux -fb and hoped for the best, but no luck. I get the feeling that it doesn´t got the driver for my graphic-card or monitor. I even tried the other.img for older drivers but it didn´t work. By the way its not a CD-RW. Other ideas?? /Edvard _s_p_r_a_y_ Här börjar Internet! Other ideas?? /Edvard Hmm... Well Edvard, here I have to ask you a very silly questions - no offence intended ! How did you create the boot-floppy ? - I suppose here, that you did it from Windows, 'cause that's the way most people do it, considering the fact that it's practically impossible to purchase a PC here in Scandinavia without that virus pre-installed. Now, simply copying the boot-image from the CD to floppy won't work, because this only puts some bits into a FAT (DOS/windows) filesystem on the floppy. The floppy needs to be raw to be bootable. To accomplish that, you must use a special gadget, called rawrite, located on the CD in dosutils\rawrite.exe (in dos/windows-notation). Here's how : * insert the CDROM, then open the icon My Computer, right click on the CDROM drive icon and select Open * go into the dosutils directory and double-click on the rawwritewin icon * insert a blank floppy in the floppy drive * select D:\images\cdrom.img in the Image File field (assuming that your CDROM drive is D:, otherwise replace D: as needed) * select A: in the Floppy Drive field then click on Write. To begin the installation, insert the CDROM in the drive, as well as the boot floppy if necessary, then restart the computer. OK - If all this is trivial to you, this is a newbie-list, remember ? - That aside, if you've already fabricated the floppy correctly and it doesn't boot, please return to the list and we'll try to walk you trough from here. It would be nice to have further information about your system, though : especially your harddisk-setup (is a dos/windows-partition already present ?, do you want to preserve it ?, how many GB does it contain ?, is it an IDE or a SCSI disk ?). What's the output from fdisk (if it's there) ? Edvard, I think your problem is of common interest, so I've taken the liberty to publish this thread to the list. Some people here know more than somewhat about real operating systems ! Kaj Haulrich Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://wwwmandrakestorecom
[newbie] Can´t install on Dell XPS 180n
Hi! I just bought an old Dell XPS 180n with 98 MB Ram. It works great with win98. I tried to install Mandrake 8.1 with a floppy disk contaning the cdrom.img. It loads the floppy but then I see that my monitor loses the connection with the computer (that is it turn black and gets ofline) and the cdrom doesn´t spin either. I know the CD and the floppy disk are ok, they worked great with my new computer. Does anyone got any suggestion about what could be wrong? I appreciate any help, /Edvard _s_p_r_a_y_ Här börjar Internet!
