i still would like to set you '/etc/lilo.conf' and '/etc/fstab' files.

problems that you stated before are still unclear and above files will
shed light on just how you are set up as for automount or supermount.
peace out.

tc,hago.

Here is my lilo.conf

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.21-0.13mdk
  label=91-2.4.21.0
   root=/dev/hda7
   initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.21-0.13mdk.img
   append= quiet devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi acpi=on
   #append= quiet devfs=mount hdd=ide-scsi acpi=off
   vga=791
   read-only
The # line is as how M9.1 created it, but I want both dvd and writer
scsi-emulated

Here is my fstab
Under automount, works fine.
/dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom auto
user,iocharset=iso8859-15,umask=0,exec,codepage=850,ro,noauto 0 0
/dev/scd1 /mnt/cdrom2 auto
user,iocharset=iso8859-15,umask=0,exec,codepage=850,ro,noauto 0 0

As per M9.1 installer supermount, except I changed /dev/hdc to /dev/scd0
to reflect scsi-em.
#none /mnt/cdrom supermount
dev=/dev/scd0,fs=auto,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0
#none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount
dev=/dev/scd1,fs=auto,rw,--,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

As per supermount suggestion here on list
#none /mnt/cdrom
dev=/dev/scd0,fs=auto,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0
#none /mnt/cdrom2
dev=/dev/scd1,fs=auto,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

Of course I #, and un # , each set of entries and run mount -a to
remount them in each trial case.

neither of the two supermounts work well, true you can use the command
line, but that is about all.
There are no properties entries in desktop Icons for each device to
access media that way.

In addition many apps, including xcdroast, work badly with these
supermounts.
When I click on xcdroast it takes an eon to load the app to screen.
Reading media from dvd and write takes far too long,
The read process is slow , much slower than the natural speed of the drives.

In short , noone would want to use supermount under these conditions.

The only other thought that just may possibly have a bearing here is
that I do have both a camera and a smart card reader that appears on
the bus, when connected, and always sends all devices connected to the
bus , ie dvd,writer, camera and smartcard reader to go walkies around
the bus, ending on different addresses on each bootup occassion, so that
when I use an app like xcdroast , or cdrecord I have to reset the device
setting every time I load it.
I don't think this is relevant to the supermount question, but I mention
it just the same, as I suspect the whole question of how the system
allocates addresses to the bus for each and every device is still a
matter for refinement. Yes, it is another issue ,but a related issue
and requires attention.

g, sorry, i didn't have your e-mail address and i had lost the other thread

it's a philips cd-rw drive, model CDD4801/81, it's manufacture date is listed
as april 2000, that's physically on the drive, checked today. also found out
today that it's meant as an OEM drive for a prebuilt, like a dell or gateway
or whatever. of course, i'm not on a prebuilt, i've spent about as much as i
would've on a prebuilt and got something that'd kick a prebuilt's you know
what (well, once i get the soundblaster LIVE 5.1 card my friend is sending
me, freebies are great!)

the major issuesi can load a music CD in, go to KsCD and play it and have
full control over it. my guess would be that's because the sound is
outputting straight to the sound card (because i remembered to hook the cable
up for that) and there's minimal control that needs to be done from the
user end at that point, but that's just a guess.

a CD burn was attempted, but it aborted on track 4 of 13. it could be a bad
track, not everything was fully written, but it did not complete and the disc
reads as if there's nothing on it. upon loading a data CD though, when i try
to access it either with the icon on the desktop or through kwikdisc, the
computer goes into kernal panic and locks up. i have not tried again through
a command line since i formatted and reinstalled, but it was doing the same
thing when i was trying before (and i can't remember the exact commands i was
using, sorry).

cdrecord --scanbus

(i'm starting to remember how to do some things w/out asking!)

now, when i open a terminal and run

cd /mnt
dir

i get

'cdrom  floppy  scd0  win_c  win_c2  win_d  win_e  win_f  win_g'

throw mdk9.1 install disc 3 into the drive

cd cdrom
dir

all i get is [EMAIL PROTECTED] cdrom]$

so then i try

cd scd0

and it tells me there's no such file or directory. so i 'cd /mnt' and 'dir'
again, then 'cd scd0' followed by 'dir' and all i get is [EMAIL PROTECTED]
scd0]$

THENi noticed this stuff while wandering around the directories

/dev/cdroms there's a hard disc icon named 'cdrom0'. right click properties
and it says points to ../scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/cd but that would point
it towards the primary ide channel, not the secondary, and the cd drive is on
the secondary channel..am i right saying it's trying to point to the primary
ide channel? that's a random stab in the dark for me, but that's a guess.
at least i'm trying to think!

in my bios, Ultra DMA mode is disabled for the cd-rw drive. i don't know if
my cd-rw drive supports UDMA, i have choices from 0-4 and disabled. that's
another guess for me...might be worthless info, i dunno.

ok, i think i've covered all basesi think...if there's more info needed,
lemme

oh, and to add.

was posted under the cd drive refuses to work threadi was suggested to
use the middle connection on the cable instead of the connection on the end
for the cd drive. i've got nothing to lose by swapping it, and there's
nothing else on that cable anyway.
