If you just dial your ISP how long before you get a modem tone?

Thanks. I tried tree times today (the last one while compiling this message)
and got a modem response almost immediatedly. I only have this problem once
in a while and the second (sometimes the third) time it works. I will make
sure I get modem sounds 'unmuted' to make sure my ISP is to blame :) It's no
big problem, OTOH when my ISP doen't 'answer the phone' I don't get charged
by the phone company while I have to pay a fixed amount for the phone just
'being answered' (plus of course charges per second plus a montly fee) :(

hear the modem ;) )

With the KDE application to dial to my ISP I sometimes get this with
show log checked:

After trying again ('cancel' / 'connect') it works most times:
the last line is replaced by something about connection speed/protocol when
I succesfully connect to my ISP. So I think your modem has a problem talking
to your ISP's modem. Kpp - setup - Device - flow control
maybe has something to do with it? Maybe raising the modem volume (normally
muted in a standard KDE install) gives some pointers? Contact your ISP about
modem settings? I don't think this a Linux problem. Btw, could you connect
with the same modem to the same ISP with another Linux or Windows
installation? Good luck!

I had this problem too. You need to define your nameservers probably.
Add 'usepeerdns' into the file /etc/ppp/options
then connect as usual
You can now replace /etc/resolv.conf by /etc/ppp/resolv.conf and that should
set you up.

Hope this helps

Neil

I had this problem too, when I configured KPPP, but realized
that when you configure your ISP, unlike Windows, you must
specify a DNS number for your ISP. Perhaps this could be the
  cause of your problem.

You probably have not set up /etc/resolv.conf correctly.
That file contains the IP addresses of your ISP's DNS servers.

The contents should contain:

domain name of your isp
nameserver ipaddress1
nameserver ipaddress2

Good luck
