Until you get the hang of using crontabs by cli, I'd suggest using webmin, or maybe after using the cli - to look at the tab in webmin to see if the crontab will do what you wish it to do. Im going to take Steve's suggestion and use Pine for a while before i switch over to anything more complicated, it seems nice enough to use. Actually pine has some nice features - after using it for a couple of years I outgrew it and welcomed mutt into my life. I love it's configurability, but pine is a good package for e-mail, but using it for nntp is not recommended IMHO. --Steve Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Rant I remember when i got hold of a copy of Linux a year or so ago (Redhat 6.0) it was the console that i most wanted to play with, Linux was going to be a challenge to learn anyway, but thats the whole reason i installed it in the first place. I hate having everything done for me, with linux theres a 1001 different ways of doing everything, and i love it! I guess when i got Mandrake 7.1 i got back into the habit of using the GUI for every little task, even though sometimes its much quicker to use the console. So im trying to reverse that now.. i know that the GUI is going to be used more and more over the next few years, especially by people new to the OS, but i really dont think _i_ will learn that much by going that route. /Rant I hope some of the newer newbie's here try and remember that the console is much more powerful than KDE or Gnome will ever be. Anyways, my first coffee of the day is wearing off now, time for a top-up :-) Thanks for listening. and thanks for your help. I have used Pine a long time, and I switched to Sylpheed (graphical but very good imo). You can use fetchmail or getmail (a great python script) to collect mail from several pop-servers. Fetchmail is usually installed by default. Getmail is available at http://www.qcc.sk.ca/~charlesc/software/getmail-2.0/ Getmail is real easy to set up, I use it instead of fetchmail. Both pull mail and drop it off in mbox or maildir type mailboxes. I have used Pine because I have never managed to get Mutt going. The hooks it uses always puzzled me. Both can read mbox and maildir boxes. Paul Can anyone suggest a good console mail reader? I have been using Kmail for a while at home but i dont really like it that much and the console is kinda growing on me now :) I would like to configure my system to fetch my mail for me from my pop accounts and place it into my home mail file, i know that this is supposed to be possible, but how is it done? is it easy to setup is there a HOWTO somewhere? If it is possible, would it be possible to fetch mail form multiple pop accounts? In reply to jennifer's words, written Thu, 30 Aug 2001 16:15:06 -0400 I installed mutt becuase i am curious to learn a console based editor (and emacs) From the man page it seems that i should have a ~/.muttrc file in my home directory but I do not. I tried a locate and didn't vcome up with anything. I think www.mutt.org and their mailing list will be happy to provide you with all and more that you want to know! I have been using Kmail for a while at home but i dont really like it that much and the console is kinda growing on me now :) Both Pine and Mutt are very good console based MUA's. Both work in conjunction with fetchmail (as MTA). I believe Pine can retrieve POP mail directly, but not certain it can handle more than one account. I'm not certain Mutt can dirctly retrieve from a POP server. Elm is supposed to be very good also, but I've never tried that one. I liked using both Mutt and Pine, but now use Sylpheed, an excellent gui MUA. I use Mutt... not real sure about what you mean by 'keep up', but I use Procmail to filter lists I'm subscribed to into there own folders (I use Maildir format instead of mbox). Makes it easy. There's also a plethora of things you can configure in Mutt to make things easier. Like in all my folders for mailing lists, I have a macro setup to mark as deleted any message over 2 weeks old when I enter the folder, except for messages that I've 'flagged' as important. That makes life easier too (and makes threading much more effective since I'm not deleting messages as I read them. =) -- Paul Cox paul at coxcentral dot com Kernel: 2.4.7-12.3mdk - Uptime: 8 days 20 hours 41 minutes. Re: [newbie] Console Mail Readers
Yeah, it uses Pico for its' editing, but is really not bad for all-around ASCII mail handling. Large volumes of mail make Pine look like driving a Model T on the Autobahn though. Just not capable (realistically) of sorting through large chunks of mail. Besides, Pine Is Not Elm. The major difference between Pine and Elm is that Pine has its own, simple, editor for writing emails. Elm uses vi (or whatever else you want to set up in the config file). While I'm here, I have a question about console based mail readers. For the people that use them, how do you keep up with large amounts of mail in a short time, like this mailing list? I originally started using elm and found that it was such a pain to keep on top of my mail and keep it organized that I switched over to kmail. I use Eudora on Windows and Kmail on Linux, so a console-based reader seems positively anemic for me, sometimes. The lack of the mouse, for sorting through large chunks of mail doesn't work for me. Pine is great for xterms and when you can only dial in over a modem to your system. I also hacked together a quick way to access my Eudora mail from Pine. 1.) Create a folder in Pine 2.) shell out to the system and cat the contents of your Eudora mailbox onto the tail end of the Pine folder entry, like this: 'cat foo.mbx pinefoofolder' 3.) Go into Pine and open up that folder, it should contain all of the mail from Eudora. Sorry for the rant. -- Brendan Linux-Mandrake 8.1 Beta 2/Win98SE Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
