RE: [newbie] DNS Problems affter upgrade

2004-09-28 Thread Bill Shirley
Are you running bind? (The daemon is named).
It sounds like your are if you are using rndc.
When I upgraded from 10.0 OE to 10.1 CE my
/etc/rndc.conf and my /etc/named.conf got
massaged for me. rndc wouldn't work until
I un-massaged it.

Check if bind is running:
ps aux | grep named

Please post your /etc/resolv.conf

I saved my resolv.conf from the last setup along with my hosts files.
They're the same now as they were prior to the upgrade. I know what the
problem is, just not how to solve it. I am not sure it's a program that
isn't running or if one is set up right, or if it's something to d with
rndc or what. Like I said, I'm not sure what has to be running or how
some conf files have to be set up. I can post files for anyone to
compare to or view if necessary.

 Thanks

[newbie] DNS problems

2001-12-09 Thread NDPTAL85

After about a week of taking my Mandrake 8.1 box off of DHCP and giving
it its own permanent IP it can no longer resolve domain names when using
that IP. When I switch it back to DHCP it starts working fine again. I
am using kernel 2.4.13-12mdk. Has anyone else come across this problem?

My guess would be that your /etc/resolv.conf file is empty. If you were
receiving your DNS info via DHCP, then when you disabled DHCP you no
longer were receiving the IP addresses of your DNS servers. Enter them
in /etc/resolv.conf, and you should be good to go.

If it turns out that you already have the correct IP addresses for your
DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf, I don't know what is going on.

Yes I have already added the DNS servers into resolve.conf (you can
actually do that via NetConf as well) and it still isn't working. It was
working before on its own IP and it just decided to stop working for
some reason. I haven't changed anything or installed anything on it to
prompt it, one day SETI@HOME was just unable to retrieve anymore work
units and the DNS issue was the problem.

Are you using a proxy server?

I have my dial-up connection working, but I can't get anywhere in
Netscape--it keeps saying 'server not found'. I do have the appropriate
DNS
entries in kppp. What else must be set?

Check out your /etc/resolv.conf
Make sure those dns#'s ended up there. If they're not there, then add these
lines:
search your isp
nameserver dns#
nameserver dns#

That should fix things if that is the problem.

Thanks. Once again I found a solution on the archive of this list soon
after I sent the message. However, I have a question about your answer.
What does the "search your isp" line do? I only put the other two lines
in. Does it have to do with the fact that in Windows my DNS entries are set
to "server assigned"? Can Linux be set to do the same?

In an xterm window, enter:
ifconfig ppp

Look to see if your IP address is the one assigned to you for your ppp
connection, and not something local. If it's not correct, check out the
man pages for pppd. There are two commands you might need. One is for
local and one is for remote. I can't remember them off the top of my
head and the linux system I use them on lost a power supply, so can't
see it. You add them to the ppp options.

DNS tab - enter doman name: "connected.bc.ca"
in your case - enter domain name server addresses
"207.23.253.201" - click add
"207.23.253.202" - click add

 Hi again all.
Okay got my KPPP to dial out nice. It connects awsome, i can manually
enter in IP numbers and it goes there. But i still cant access my DNS
server. I have even edited my /etc/resolv.conf it looks like this

 search connected.bc.ca
 nameserver 207.23.253.201
 nameserver 207.23.253.202

I really am getting frustated as to what i have done wrong. Any idea??
maybe i missed something in config?

Thanx for your time and for letting me pick your brains. =0

Did you enter your DNS servers' IP addresses in KPPP config? Sounds like
what happened to me before I configured KPPP fully. When configuring a
dialup account, there's an option for servers or name servers. Good luck!

Can you use names as root? If yes, check permissions on
/etc/resolv.conf.

Does /etc/resolv.conf still show correct information when you're
online? KPPP has an annoying checkbox that will allow you to override
the information in /etc/resolv.conf.

From the sounds of it, routing is okay, since IP pings get responses.
