Re: [newbie] Do I nees 2 NIC for connection sharing ?

2002-03-10 Thread Hanan Shargi

Dennis you are right,

maybe I wasnt clear when i described it, it is a cat5 cable that runs frp, my
NIC to the adapter in the wall ( the adapter then adpats it to a regular phone
like output excuse my informal description )

If I got you right ,, I think all i have to do is set the W2K machine to have
IP 10.0.0.2 and make her gateway the first machine ?
I think I'm missing something here if so then where does IP masq comes in
? and where is the part where I have to set hosts files and all that ??

():-)

Calling List: please somebody jump in here :))

Oh, maybe I missunderstood. I thought you said you had a hub. If not then yes
you will need a second nic. If you have a hub, then the wall connection goes
into that at the uplink location. HTH

OOps, I stand corrected the uplink is for other uses like adding another hub?
Anyhoo, try the way stated in some others post first.

You should really use two NICs, although I suppose it could be done with 1
One NIC needs to connect to your DSL line and have the IP that the isp gave
you 10.0.0.x (i htink you said)

The other NIC connects to a hub along with all your other computers.
give it an ip of 192.168.1.1 (this is the gateway)

Give all your other computers an ip 192.168.1.xxx with a network of
192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 and a gateway of 192.168.1.1

If you are not going to have a local nameserver than set the ip hostname of
all the computers on your network in each computers /etc/hosts file, include
the ip hostname of the computer connected to the isp.

Then you will use masquerading between the two NICs (the pc with 2 NICS)
