[newbie] Email List server

2002-08-02 Thread Aaron Winters

What is involved in setting up a email list
server?I have a LM 8.2 machine that is a web/ftp server and I would like
to start an email discussion list. I do not have anything for mail running and I
don't think I even installed things like sendmail because I had no need for them
and did not want to worry about open ports I am not using so I will have to know
what software to install also. I don't really want to run an email server but I
need the list so help in getting it going and secure is what I am looking
for.
Thanks,

You need to set up a mail transfer agent, I'm using Postfix. It's really
easy to set up, you only have to change one or two things in the config
file. Also, anything you want to change regarding Postfix can easily be
changed using Webmin.

I'm running a list using Mailman. The version (I think it was 2.0.8) that
I got with the MD 8.2 download edition was giving me fits, so I downloaded
a newer RPM (version 2.0.11) and it worked like a charm.

Sympa is also on your CDs, but looking at how to set it up gave me a
headache; Mailman was pretty simple and straightforward.

I'm not sure about the security issues in running a mail server, I have
not had any problems yet. The default configurations for the MTAs are
pretty sensible.

Let me know if you decide to go with Mailman and need any help.
