[newbie] Email List server

What is involved in setting up a email list server? I have a LM 8.2 machine that is a web/ftp server and I would like to start an email discussion list. I do not have anything for mail running and I don't think I even installed things like sendmail because I had no need for them and did not want to worry about open ports I am not using so I will have to know what software to install also. I don't really want to run an email server but I need the list so help in getting it going and secure is what I am looking for. Thanks,
