Dale,
I have a PITA intermittent error on bootup which causes the monitor to
go into irrecoverable standby before Xstartup. The only way I can get
out of it is to re-boot, when I get :
Your filesystem appears, etc.
I press Y and usually it goes through checking and putting all the
filesystems to right and then runs normally. (The filesystem is ext3).

I *have* had exactly the same message as you once...
**REBOOT LINUX**

I re-booted straight away and the re-boot went back to the usual Your
filesystem appears but then carried on and corrected whatever
needed correcting and ran normally.

However, what appears to happen is that the journalling system reverts
you to a previous state of the system (??the last one that worked -
don't know). As far as I can tell there don't seem to be any fragments or
rubbish laying around that need clearing up manually.

Hope this helps.

DougB

I live in the boon docks.
Frequent power loss, generally only a fraction of a second to 5 seconds at
best.
UPS flawless for about 3 years now
APS brand, the low power one, only about $70.00
Has handled two boxes, one monitor.

Same here, so last time I loaded with reiserFS and have had no problem
since. That was a couple of months ago. We have had at least two outages
since then. I get them so fast that the ups doesn't have time to kick in
but the computer reboots. It is just a flash with the sound of the
Ventilation motor kicking and no real timespan. My ups is supposed to be
3ns but I don't have any idea if that is accurate. Sometimes when it goes
off and stays off for several minutes I have time to halt and ups works as
promised. Digression, back to the subject, reiserFS does not seem to loose
any files under the described conditions. HTH
