on each unit try to ftp itself
 ftp 127.0.0.1

If it's refused you probably are not running or installed ftp

Yep, it's refused. So where do I find / in stall an ftp server?? Can't seem
to find anything that would indicate it's a FTP server

Thanx

I don't run FTP on mandrake, but on my redhat servers I use proftpd
It should be easy to install. then you have to massage /etc/proftpd.conf.
There are example proftpd.conf files at http://proftpd.org
