Re: [newbie] Failures in 8.1 compared to 7.2

*hahahaha*

oh gosh don't even get us started on that one.
i had to go back to 7.2 also because 8.1 will not even make it thru the
install program on one of my computers. in all fairness i have to confess
that it installed just fine on my second computer.

every once in a while i try to install it again (i have an extra partition
where i'm trying to put it). so far 7 failures. ugh.

i think Mandrake is entering the Micro$oft phase of their development. you
know, the point where you have to upgrade your hardware everytime you upgrade
your software.

i love Mandrake, i really do but 8.1 is just a mess.

as to your question what's gone wrong -- i wish i knew.

just stick with 7.2 -- i've decided not to try fixing what isn't broken.
probably i will not mess with a new MDK until 9.1 comes out.

It certainly seems that way.

I want to use 8.1 because I don't want to screw up things trying to
get newer software to install on 7.2 (such as Evolution). But..

Yes. My 3DLabs video card worked OK on 7.2 but doesn't work on 8.1 -
bought an ATI Radeon VE to replace it.
My Creative CDRW1210E doesn't work as a burner in 8.1 but is
recognized as a reader only (worked good on 7.2) - contemplating a
replacement if I can't get it to mount as read-write.

8.1 is extremely slow on my old Asus P5A-B running an AMD K6/2-450
with 458MB PC-100 SDRAM. I just ordered a MSI K7T266 with the Athlon
1.3GHZ processor. Now I need to find a source for a 1GB DDR module
for that board.

What has gone wrong since 7.2.

It's just a conspiracy to get us to buy new products.

I had problems with 8.0 and 8.1. I've since learned all the work-arounds for
8.0 (still have issues with 8.1), and now I've just finished installing 8.0
on all my 7.2 boxes. I do upgrade mozilla and abiword to the versions on the
8.1 disks, and install the newest version of LinNeighborhood, too. I'm happy
for awhile. And, 8.0 runs fine on boxes as slow as 200mhz with 128 megs, but
runs better on a 233 with 256. Doesn't run worth a darn on a P75 with 32megs
though ;), but even 7.1 has a bit of a problem with that.
