 Many thanks Anne,
I installed aumix and adjusted the volume, now the volume setting
stays. Actually I did what you say right away this afternoon, but
haven't got any chance to reboot my notebook until tonight just
now. No speaker icon on systray though because I turned off Kmix.

You can still have the kmix speaker icon - but it will only work for
some kinds of sound. For other things it won't seem to make any
difference. I can't remember which bits work and which don't, but
changing things in aumix will deal with it if you hit a problem.

It's being controlled by one of the mixers. Trouble is, it could be
kmix, aumix or alsamixergui. Try adjusting each to see which does
the trick - and I'd probably do them in the reverse order from the
one I wrote.

Hi Anne. Thanks.
Doing kmix resulted this:

Loading required GL library /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2

Please check that the soundcard is installed and that
the soundcard driver is loaded.

aumix : no such file

alsamixer:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] shorewall]# alsamixer
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory

Now I have to two speaker icons on the systray :)) Closing one.

have you saved the 90% setting as the default volume in kmix, i believe that
the 'save session' doesn't save kmix volumes, it starts with its default
volumes

Yes, I did, bascule. I even modified the kmix conf file directly. But,
strange, it seems that all the settings are restored to the original
everytime I reboot.

Which ones get installed depends on window manager and other
installations. Are you running kde? If so, install the packages
that it's asking for (that you listed above). Maybe it will function
