RE: [newbie] Need advise on text editors for programming
Try jEdit (http://www.jedit.org) It's the best editor I have come across, it's free and it's totally platform independent. (So you can use it under Windows too.) -- Richard Urwin, Private Confirmed as a crazy system administrator (NAG p348) -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Adolfo Bello Sent: 16 December 2002 18:42 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [linux] [newbie] Need advise on text editors for programming I am really new to Linux (less than 3 months) and want to start doing all my web programming under Mandrake 9. What are the best text editors? I would really like something with regexp, syntax color, automatic indenting, able to open several files at once. Either graphic or text based. Now working with vi (I like its regexp search and replace) but I hate its limited copy-cut-paste capabilities. I work with Ultraedit under Windowz. Something like it for Linux will do it. Vi is not so limited... You can try emacs but I'm not very satisfied with the php-mode, particularly when I write scripts in a .html file... I use now bluefish. The gui is very nice and there are a lot of functions to manage web programming. There are lots of text editors on linux but the two main ones are vim and emacs. both have a bit of a learning curve both do all that you ask, and as to which is better is a dangerous question to answer. I have tried emacs and after much persistance I finally learned vim well enough to call it my tool. aaron - Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Re: [newbie] Need advise on text editors for programming
I use SciTE for almost everything. I haven't heard too much about it in and about, but it's been there for quite a while now and supports all the things you mentioned. Mandrake doesn't distribute the files, and I haven't found any Mandrake RPM's around, so I made my own. It looks like a simple looking gtk program, but under the hood there is fire ;-) It supports java, php, html, c, c++, python, javascrip, latex, and you name it. If you wanna try it, download it my RPM from: :http://axljab.homelinux.org:8080/lm9rpms/scite/ Greetings, Ralph -- http://tuxpower.f2g.net/ http://axljab.homelinux.org:8080/ Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? RE: [newbie] Need advise on text editors for programming
most of the windows text editors will work in wine,, perhaps you should keep going with what you know till you get to know the linux ones better.. I still use textpad for most of my perl coding.. rgds frank -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Stephen Kuhn Sent: Tuesday, 17 December 2002 2:48 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] Need advise on text editors for programming On Tue, 2002-12-17 at 05:42, Adolfo Bello wrote: I am really new to Linux (less than 3 months) and want to start doing all my web programming under Mandrake 9. Nedit is probably the best choice. But I would reccommend getting at least a working exposure to vi or vim which you will find on ANY linux distro. Cheers!
