[newbie] Red Hat to Mandrake

2001-02-08 Thread Owens, Blaine C

A couple of years ago I was given a dual boot Win98/Red Hat 5.2 PC for some
computer related work I had done for a friend. At the time my ISP was dialin
and I had all working very well. Since (about 2 weeks ago) I have gone to
cable modem and just haven't taken the time to try to figure out how to get
my Linux system working. In the meantime another co-worker who I have helped
out on Unix systems where I work has given me Mandrake 7.2 CD's along with
StarOffice CD's. I would like to try out all this but I have a question
before proceeding - do I need to "wipe out" the Red Had before proceeding or
do I just do an install of the Mandrake? If advisable to "wipe out" Red Hat
- how? Thanks.

hi, thought i'd toss out an answer to this -- with a warning -- i have never done
this. =) remember what free advice is worth.

anyhowz, i recall some time ago on this very list someone wrote that they did exactly
that. they had Red Hat (i don't recall the version however) on their box. they put
in the Mandrake CD (v7.0 or 7.1) and used the update option and it worked.

however, i'm thinking this might not work with 7.2. many folks have had problems
going for 7.0 or 7.1 to 7.2 with the update install, because the 7.2 version changed
the directories in which some files are located. the general warning issued on this
list is when installing 7.2 format and start from there, do not try to update. this
is not to say some people here have not used the update feature and had it work just
fine. they have.

so, my newbeish thought would be for you to format and do a fresh install. if i'm way
off base here hopefully someone will correct me.

I'd recently moved from RH 6.0 to lm7.2 on two pc's ( will be
-- if the video card cooperates -- doing a third this weekend).
One had had only RH on it, I wanted to dual-boot, so I'd had to
format the whole drive. The other though, was alread dual-
booting with W2k, so I just popped the lm7.2 cd in the drive
started the install. I'd formatted the RH partition installed
there. Worked fine.

Can't say it'll work for everyone on every pc without trouble,
but it souldn't cause any stress. Just don't do an upgrade.
Even if it allows the install, you'll definitely run into hassels
if you're even able to boot up.

Oh, StarOffice is pretty cool. I've been using it since just
bofore Sun bought StarDivision ( had used an early pre-cursor to
StarWriter, called WordStar, many years ago on a CP/M box).
Though I'd relied on M$ Word -- liked it -- for years, I'd had
no problem moving to SO love it.

Re: [newbie] red hat to mandrake

1999-10-04 Thread Simon Norris

Unfortunately it's not the removal that I have a problem with. During clean
installs of Mandrake, I cannot get the installer to create a boot disk or
LILO, yet in Red Hat I can create both. My first theory was to get the boot
floppy from Red Hat, and use it to get into Mandrake, then use 'that
command' to build a new LILO. But because the kernel version numbers are
different, it didn't work.

Looks like this weekend will be the first attempt at the upgrade, I'll let
you people know how it went.

Get a Windows boot disk, boot to the disk (which has MS
FDISK on it) and type "fdisk /mbr" and it'll wipe the
master boot record. I don't recommend doing this if you've
got something you want to save in the way of a current
Linux install, as it can be problematic getting back to the
existing install w/o a proper boot floppy.

Cheers Brian, I think all I needed is someone to attempt it before me, to
give me the confidence to jump in with both feet!!

Throughout the Mandrake documentation, it recommends only going for fresh
builds, not bothering with upgrades. Now my question is, what is it that
they're so worried about? Is it really that bad to upgrade from Red Hat 5.1
to Mandrake 6? Will I hit any brick walls?

Well, RedHat 5.1 didn't know about KDE, and it had OLD
versions of many of the library files which may or may NOT
be updated.

The other option is to perform a kernel
 replacement/recompile, and then add
in all the extra packages that Mandrake provides. I
would prefer not to attempt that just yet, I would much
prefer to figure out if it can be upgraded with the
CD. Is there anything I should look out for? FYI, I
will attempt this anyway, it would just be nice to hear
from anyone who's tried it and succeeded or failed.

The problem with doing an "upgrade" is that not everything
will be updated and there's been some SERIOUS changes since
that version of RedHat, even in RedHat 6 there's been some
serious changes! Really would be better to back up your
user directories (or copy 'em to a separate drive, even)
and wipe the system!

Re: [newbie] red hat to mandrake via upgrade option

1999-09-30 Thread Brian J. Babiuk

Speaking from experience...you can upgrade, and it might even be preferable
to installing the system fresh. (Especially if you have a SB16 PnP sound
card, or possibly any PnP cards). I installed RH 5.2 some time ago. While
I am still on the lower end of the linux learning curve, I still pride
myself in knowing enough to get by. What I can't figure out I ask. I had
no problems installing RH5.2. And to be honest I didn't have much problems
installing Mandrake 6.1, except I couldn't get my sound card to work. It
all had to do with that stupid "isapnp.cong" file that sets up PnP cards at
boot up. It kept detecting conflicts with my card. (when infact none
exist!)I investigated the problem and discovered from the FAQ page that
no one knew why this happened, except that they suspected something to do
with the isapnp file and the 6.x build. So I ripped off. I was going to go
back to 5.2, and rebuild my kernel, and libraries manually. The idea really
didn't appeal to me. So in a last desparation effort, I installed 5.2, then
upgraded with Mandrake 6.1. The trick is though as someone mentioned
earlier, It won't upgrade everything. So think! Figure out what you need,
and manually select the packages. If you select something that needs
something you didn't select...don't sweat it. The install program will tell
you and ask you if it should install the packages!

I didn't mean to come across as an authority. I just am speaking from my
own experience. I hope this helps someone!
