Re: [newbie] Staroffice 5.2 and M8
as sridhar pointed out .. the normal install will only be for the user who installed it. ie. if user foo installs it .. only he nor root nor any other user will be able to access it. to allow all users to use star office.. u will have to do it from root.. if i remember correctly su wont work coz u will be using the user's home dir. to enable other users u will have to read the documentation. plus, i believe the open source version www.openoffice.org has put the options u r looking for in the setup. it is now at v6.28 (i think) enjoy - Original Message - From: Sridhar Dhanapalan [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, September 20, 2001 3:19 AM Subject: Re: [newbie] Staroffice 5.2 and M8 On Wed, 19 Sep 2001 17:15:11 +, Stewart Taylor [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi All I have a problem that is driving me mad.I tried installing StarOffice 5.2 whilst logged in as root. That's right. to allow all users to use star office.. u will have to do it from root.. if i remember correctly su wont work coz u will be using the user's home dir. Sorry, but that is not correct. A su to root gives full root privileges on that tty, including use of the root home dir. With su, there is almost _no_ need whatsoever to log in as root. The last time I logged in as root was over six months ago, and that was because I had messed-up my system and I was booting with a rescue disc. An su installation will work fine (that's how I did it). to enable other users u will have to read the documentation. I did a quick search, and I found that the parameter to enable a network installation is /net. plus, i believe the open source version www.openoffice.org has put the options u r looking for in the setup. it is now at v6.28 (i think) Sun is turning the OpenOffice.org code into StarOffice 6 (kind of like how Netscape turns Mozilla into Netscape 6). A StarOffice 6 beta is due out next month. enjoy - Original Message - From: Sridhar Dhanapalan [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, September 20, 2001 3:19 AM Subject: Re: [newbie] Staroffice 5.2 and M8 On Wed, 19 Sep 2001 17:15:11 +, Stewart Taylor [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi All I have a problem that is driving me mad.I tried installing StarOffice 5.2 whilst logged in as root.
