I am feeling particularly stupid and frustrated just now. I downloaded
some files in preparation for installing gwenview. I saved them to
/home/rosemary/Linux Stuff/rpms - now I can't cd into it, tells me no
such file or directory. Thought I would rename it, but same problem. I
don't want to have to do the downloads again. I've not had this problem
before. I can see the rpms in konqueror and that is the path it gives.
It seems simple but I am stumped. Wondered if it doesn't like the Linux
Stuff name?

Rosemary

Rosemary, if you just click on the rpm in Konqueror you'll be asked for the

root password, enter that and the rpm will install. Or am I out in left
field again and this is not what your ultimate intent is?

Usually I would be happy to do that, but had instructions re gwenview to
install in a certain order, and using urpmi, so that if there were
errors I could cut and paste the output for problem solving.
I've fiddled around and done some more downloads and have it going.
Thanks for your help

I am very much a beginner, having just purchase the
linux pocket book 3rd edition.

I am trying to load Mandrake 7.2 but it doesn't seem
to be able to identify my hard disk. The booklet
mentions Mandrake can partition the HD during
installation. When booting the mandrake CD I get the
response 'hda: no response (reseting drive)'. It then
goes through the installation but fails when it
reaches the partitioning stage.

I have an ASUS A7V motherboard with an AMD 700 CPU and
a 30 Gig IBM-DLTA-307030 hard disk using WinME Promise
Ultra100 (tm)IDE controller (PDC20265).

Can anyone give me some directions ?

Go to the Linux-Mandrake Mail list web page where you subscribed. There are
instructions there for temporarily stopping mail and starting and
unsubscribing. http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/flists.php3 Should do
it, oh also send everyone on the list $1 a photo of your.etc.etc.etc.

I thought that this was a users group. If someone is able to answer a question
they normally do. I've certainly found that to be the case since I first
joined last August.

Keep questions concise and search the archives first. Apart from recent
developments most basic points have been well aired in the past.

How you ask a question will often determine the response you get. It costs
nothing to be polite to your fellow newbies - after all we are all in the same
boat.

Another thing I checked...my fstab file doesn't have the 'exec' that
 yours does.
Don't know if it belongs there or if it would make a difference...

I'm not sure what you mean by this either.. But in my netscape in Windows
it just says "mail", for news it says "news". It's because with cable
modems it's similar/the same as being on a LAN and you wouldn't need a DNS
appropriate address to access the "local" mailserver..

thanks,

 Greetings again,

Here's yet another problem. I'm an @home user. In WinDOZE the mail
server in Netscape is merely "mail". Well I've tried this in Netscape in
Linux to no avail. Anyone know what to do?! Currently I am using
netmail.home.com as my mail server, and it works mostly, but I'd like to
use the "intended" one if possible.. Thanks!

One answer which should kill /most/ of the unsub requests is a procmail
filter at the server which catches requests with unsubscribe in the title,
zaps the posting and sends back instructions (or even sends the correct
unsubscribe request to sympa). Obviously, it won't kill ALL requests but it
should cut the number down with no human intervention. If all the "I want
to be here" users agree to not use the "unsubscribe" word in their posts.,
then we could extend the filter to catch that word /anywhere/ in the
message.

I belong to a couple of other lists that use the 'unsubscribe' appended
to the end of each message and still have people trying to unsubscribe
incorrectly. I think it all boils down to the concept that ignorant is
repairable and stupid is for life.

will be doing a great service to humanity.

I am trying not to nit-pick but I was going through my mailbox and I noticed
that one of the favorite subject line for unsubscribing to the list also
happpens to be
Subject: Please get me off the list
Subject: HELP how do i get off this damn list
...etc ...

Boy it is going to be difficult to filter that! (Assuming that we have enough
say/permission/authority to do things on the listserver end ... BTW are the
listowners even ON this list?)

Whilst I can appreciate that these messages can annoy some people why
respond
to them in group mail. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that
you
are guilty of increasing the group mail yourselves.

The expression "The pot calling the kettle black" springs to mind.

If some of you must lecture people trying to unsubscribe do it to the
person's
email address and NOT in group mail.

Tried thatdoesn't seem to work.

There seems to be alot of people trying to unsubscribe directly to this
list (WTF). There is a CRAPLOAD of unnecessary unsubscribing to the wrong
address. Something is broken here. It shouldn't be that hard to
unsubscribeall that's needed is a little time to read the directions or
going back to the webpage where that person subscribed in the first place.

Either there are alot of dumb people here who can't follow unsubscribe
directions or the unsubscribe directions are wrong. Overall, I'm a bit
tired of all the needless unsubscribe spam. Time for me to go. I'll rely
on the newsgroups instead.
