Hey, no argument there. All authoritarian regimes are doomed to failure,
according to the SNAFU principle, dare I post it again:

http://www.jargon.net/jargonfile/s/SNAFUprinciple.html

'United' doesn't have to mean under the current EU model, though. I meant it in
a more general sense.

Again, no argument, but it at least shows that there is enough vocal opposition
amongst 'the people' to snap some of these autocrats out of their blissful
reverie. That in and of itself, you are correct, is not enough though.

The best way to defeat authority, in the end, is simply to ignore it. Let MS
patent everything they want, the hackers that started this F/OSS thang will, as
they always have, simply route around the obstacles, and the users will keep on
comin' on over to a better deal.

While I agree that this is an important issue and that you are all on
the right side, I think that you cannot deny that talking about the
"EU-politburo" is FUD as well. Giving examples of patents on sandwiches,
one-click ordering systems or browser-plugins is not the way to go
either, however stupid these patents are.

In any case, I thought this mailing list was about installing and
configuring mandrakelinux for newbies.

If you think I'm wrong, you can safely ignore this message, I'm not in a

Well, I know that the Extramadura region, the City of Munich, the
City of Bergen and maybe Vienna has moved. On the other hand, the
City of Paris, the City of Newham and the entire British National
Health Service caved in to Microsoft's "offers they couldn't
refuse". Don't know about the French administration, though.

But the problem isn't Linux vs. Microsoft. It's about standards and
patents. When the EU Politburo allows software patents Microsoft
will be able to dictate how the public administration communicates
with citizens : only closed, proprietary protocols will be allowed,
forcing all of us to pay the Microsoft tax. And bye-bye to
software development : can you name me just one invention (aside
from FUD) made by Microsoft ?

There's an excellent article by RMS here :

Well Joe, first and foremost : EUrabia will never be united. On the
contrary, it is decaying rapidly. Exactly like its predecessor,
the Soviet Union.

Secondly, when the present EU with its Central Committee - eh -
Commission and Politburo -eh - Council has vanished into the
scrapyard of history maybe democracy get another chance in some
parts of Europe.

Thirdly, the present Patent issue is just "delayed", not removed.
No matter what the various parliaments (including the EU
Parliament) decides, the Politburo doesn't care one bit.
Microsoft, Siemens, Nokia etc.. still "owns" the Commissars, the
Eurocrats and politicians.

OK Caroll, maybe "the US Patent Office operates in head-up-butt mode
every day" but do they own the patent ? - And if they've got their
heads where you say, how can they find the head (= john) ?

Anyway, the EU doesn't have a head (=brain) at all but lots of
behinds (big, big ones) so I still believe I can take out a patent
on placing those butts in heads (=johns).

Patent insanity has been around a long time
None of James Watt's designes had crankshafts because somebody seeing the

Kaj:
Sorry, but your idea isn't patentable. It's the prior art thing. After all,
the US Patent Office operates in head-up-butt mode every day. A few years
ago, a guy got a patent in his child's name that covered swinging on a
child's swing from side to side rather than the conventional front to back
motion. I contemplated filing one for swinging cattywampus on behalf of my
grandson, but decided that I shouldn't feed the madness. Well, that and it

Working closely with the patent office Mr Holland eventually settled
for his now granted patent on methods of inserting food or beverage
