While I agree that this is an important issue and that you are all on the right side, I think that you cannot deny that talking about the "EU-politburo" is FUD as well. Giving examples of patents on sandwiches, one-click ordering systems or browser-plugins is not the way to go either, however stupid these patents are. In any case, I thought this mailing list was about installing and configuring mandrakelinux for newbies. On the other hand, the City of Paris, the City of Newham and the entire British National Health Service caved in to Microsoft's "offers they couldn't refuse". Don't know about the French administration, though. But the problem isn't Linux vs. Microsoft. It's about standards and patents. When the EU Politburo allows software patents Microsoft will be able to dictate how the public administration communicates with citizens : only closed, proprietary protocols will be allowed, forcing all of us to pay the Microsoft tax. And bye-bye to software development : can you name me just one invention (aside from FUD) made by Microsoft ? A few years ago, a guy got a patent in his child's name that covered swinging on a child's swing from side to side rather than the conventional front to back motion. I contemplated filing one for swinging cattywampus on behalf of my grandson, but decided that I shouldn't feed the madness.
