As an addendum to this, even if the aforementioned web site says
'nay' on your winmodem, you can in some instances get it to work anyway.
My particular modem (ID'd by FCC number) is labeled in red as a
tool-of-Micro$oft winmodem incompatible with Linux, but I'm able to use
the Lucent drivers to connect anyway. I don't know how, but I'm not going
to argue with the thing. =)

I'd
say you are.:-) When the Gateway 166 MHz systers were out there were
4 modems they used. Three of these were the Winmodem.
IIRC

PCI
doesn't have anything do to with something being a WIN device. From what I
understand a WIN anything depends on Windoze software to
function.

Subject: [newbie] UsRobotics PCI
Modem

Hello, I'm triying to configure a
UsRobotics PCI Modem (not a winmodem) but I don't find
how to doit. I tried with harddrake, linuxconf, compiling the kernel 2.2.15,
compiling the new kernel 2.4.0test9 and with a Driver ltmodem. In the 2.4
kernel I don't find where to configure it, in the old one (2.2.15) also,
harddrake tells me that is a winmodem but its not. and the driver tells me
that ltmodem.o was compiled for kernel 2.2.12-20 and I have kernel 2.2.15
and 2.4.0test9.
How can I configure this modem?
Thanks

Javier:
Are you are certain that it is not a winmodem? Although not all PCI
modems are winmodems, most are.
USR makes both kinds. The best place to settle the question is
www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html. It contains a very long list of
modems (sorted by manufacturer), and tells you if it is a real modem
(good news - although you've still got a problem, it's probably
solvable, a winmodem (bad news- probably won't work), or a linmodem --
that's a winmodem for which a Linux driver has been written. The site
also has a lot of links to other sites dedicated to modems. If you do
have a real modem, then the problem may be with
Plug-and-(sometimes)Play. I had this problem with my Zoom modem, and I
got around it be changing the jumpers on the card from pnp to com
whatever. If you do decide to go to the above site, it would be a good
idea to know the FCC ID number for your modem, as that is the primary
means of identification. The FCC ID is usually written on a white paper
