Well, not wanting you to truly deviate from the path you've already taken, but why not
do the setup and administration of ProFTP through Webmin instead of using alternative

and a

whereis gproftpd

I used gproftpg just because I couldn´t find webmin. I´m very much a newbie and didn´t

I would appreciate if anyone could tell me where to find webmin.

IIRC it is not installed by default. It is, though on your cds, and is well
worth the effort to install it. It has many valuable administration tools.

Well mate, open up a browser, and type in any of the following - one
will surely work:

https://localhost:1/
http://localhost:1/
https://127.0.0.1:1/

Login as:
username: root
password: (whatever your root password is)

...and voila!

And yes, I think it is a front end for gnome.

I have both gnome and KDE installed. I logged in as root and gproftpd worked perfectly
under
KDE.

[newbie] Where is proftpd?

2003-01-14 Thread fifner the dragon
Hi,
I ran the ftp utility in the mandrake control center (mandrake9). It installed proftpd
for me.

Where can I find proftpd?

And does it run with a GUI? If not, can I get a GUI for it?

Thanks in advance,

Once the RPM is installed the proftp daemon will be started automatically. If
you look in MandrakeControlCentreSystemServices you will see its status.

If it is running you should be able to make ftp connections into your
computer.

urpmi gproftpd

will install the GUI for you

To be honest, when I was replying to the original poster I was just about to
write There is no GUI, when I noticed gproftpd in Software Manager.

Apart from starting it up to see what it looks like, I have never used it.

You can administer ProFTP through Webmin - under SERVERS.

Fifner,

the answers to your questions are in order of appearance:

runs as a service - it is an FTP server: service proftpd start|stop|restart|
no...
no...

I'm wondering though...from your post it sounds as though you understood
Proftpd to be a client that would allow you to transfer files? is this
correct? If so...that is not the case. Proftpd is an FTP server and will
allow others to upload/download files to/from your machine. Once it's
correctly configured that is...

If all you really wanted was a client program with which you could
download/transfer files from your computer to other computers then gFTP does
a nice job and is very likeyly already on your system.

In the event that you did indeed mean to install an FTP server on your
computer, then why eat hamburg when you can just as readily eat steak? and
very good steak at that. ( Pure-FTPd ) IT's much more secure and a bit less
work to get setup and running. But...to each his own...
