AW: [newbie] Xserver Problem with Trident 3DImage985
Hello there, I had a similar problem. My graphics card was a TRIDENT CyberBlade i7 3D AGP, my Monitor is a LG Studioworks 78FT (17" Flatron, 1600 x 1200). Due to my experience I shall never again buy any card or any Motherboard that has a Trident chip on it. Trident just sucks. What I did to make it work: Chose my Trident CyberBlade i7 and selected a generic "1024 x 768 60Hz LCD" ( !!! ) as my Monitor, as all other settings would not work with this card (my LG Monitor works OK when used with other cards such as ATI or NVIDIA). The result was that I got a 1024 x 768 16-Bit color screen at 60Hz. B U T : The performance really really sucks and is way behind even my slow old Pentium 90. I had to turn off almost all "special effects" such as "show contents when moving window" etc. Altough I made it work, I found my Linux experience with my Trident card was so frustrating that I shut it down and now instead use a RIVA TNT2 based card. The device is in the Driver list of this version of mandrake.I select the device from the list. Also my Monitor is in the list of monitors. It probes the setting Ok but X server has some problems with this device. Also when I select 800X600 in 8 bit mode, the X server can't perform a proper appearance. If anybody has the remedy, please inform me. Regards A. Momeni __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Why would you want to run in 8 bit mode, its horrible! Have you tried a generic 800*600 monitor, or if it is multisync, a generic 800*600 multisync monitor? Also 60hz is a frequency that most if not all monitors can run at. It may not be the easiest on the eye, but it almost always works and also prolongs the life of your monitor too :-) I have seen people set their monitors at ridiculously high frequency just because people say that it is better, well it IS better, especially for the manufacturers of Monitors, they get to sell new ones after yours carks it :-(.. Rant mode off :-) Try as I suggested, and if it works, let all of us know, it may help others.. Cheers: Mike. __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

I had similar problems with my Trident 3DImage975 AGP vid card, and tried for about 2 weeks to get it to work. I eventually fooled around and got it so I could get into a GUI, but it would constantly lock up on me. I finally went out and bought a new vid card, (ATI Expert98 PCI), reinstalled Mandrake 7.02 from scratch, and everything worked beautifully. If you go to the XFree86 website, they recommend the S3 chipset cards first, then an ATI vid card. Sorry I couldn't offer any more advice. Bryan P.S. If you read the README.trident file, you will see that they had problems with many of Trident's card.
