[newbie] another modem question

2000-09-18 Thread John

Does anyone know how to use the setserial command to change the IRQ setting
of a modem to IRQ 5.

For some reason, linux seems to want to use IRQ 4 but that creates a
conflict. I've jumpered my modem to use IRQ 5 (which is free) but linux
doesn't want to recognize it as that. I read that I need to use the
setserial command to do this but I'm not sure of the syntax.

I'm currently using this modem with a Red Hat 6.2 system but plan on moving
it to my Mandrake system on the weekend.

Thanks for all your help.

When I was a tech I installed many Phoebe modems. They are pretty
decent, and had models that could be jumper set to COM IRQ (a very good
thing!). I bought my USRobotics before the v.90 spec had existed very long,
if there would have been a need for updating this was a better choice. At
this point in time, since the v.90 spec has been in use for quite some time
the Phoebe is what I would choose for myself. -Gary-

A search of 'harware modem' at www.pricewatch.com will return
several dozen. A Phoebe built around the Texas Instruments chipset
is about $40. It's basically the same modem as the 3com/USR that
 costs twice as much.

I don't know if this is still relating or not, but I have that same modem. I
was using Mandrake 6.0 until recently and the way that I got mine to work
without having to get the card out and make changes was to edit the
"hosts.allow hosts.deny" along with setting the BIOS with "NO" PNP OS
Installed.

Then, I added this command that helped myself since I have the modem set
with the v.90 update: ATFC1D2S202=32X3S6=4M0

This will let you dial-out without having to wait for a dial-tone, which I
was having a problem with on my if I turned off the speaker! If there's
anything else... e-mail me and I'll see what I can do for you!

Keith
