I can tell you that mandrake seems fine on a Compaq Armada M700, it has a
winmodem lucent Mini-PCI, but lucent winmodems can be made to work now I
believe..

They have a great screen to, I am typing this on one now... :-)

I've installed Mandrake 8.1 on several different laptops and can say that
it has generally been simple and straightforward. There is a lot of
support on the web for Linux on a notebook. I'm currently running it on a
Dell C600 using a Linksys 802,11b wireless networking card that was no
more trouble to configure than any 100 base card I've ever used.

My purpose was to run a web and mail server here on my DSL line. No
fans, doesn't take up much space, even has an integrated UPS (otherwise
known as a battery). Neither web or mail server is particularly taxing on
the hardware so I like the solution.

  'd say go for it.

What are you asking? For a distribution or a specific laptop model?

If this is of any help I installed Linux-Mandrake 8.0 on an HP N3215 running
475Mhz AMD K-6, 128Mb, 4Gb harddrive, and a Cyberblade graphics chip powering
a passive matric LCD. The installation was great but there is no touchpad. I
don't know if this has been solved or not but it might give you some idea.
Just like with desktop software modem won't work for the majority and those
that can require some work.

Good luck.
