[newbie] cpuinfo

2004-02-24 Thread Brian's Linux Box
Does cpuinfo show the actual cpu MHz that the cpu is running at
or does it
only show what it is rated at ?

I'm pretty sure it shows what it is running at When I overclocked
my XP2500 it reported it as an XP3200
I also _think_ you want the and 7.5 setting as there is some doubling
goes on there somewhere. I can dig out my manual if required. I gather
that's the way it's set now?

Thanks to all for the explanations, I now understand the subject a lot better.
As with most things the biggest problem is knowing whether there is a problem.
In this case as I didn't know whether cpuinfo reported an actual value or the
processor's specification I didn't know whether I had a problem.

What it's actually running at. My 3000+ is rated at 13x166,
2166Mhz. I run it at 13x173, 2250 MhzEG,

model name : AMD Athlon(TM) XP 3000+
stepping: 0
cpu MHz : 2250.146

2008/133 = 15

Better boards have a jumper to set FSB, then bios tweaks to
modify that in 1 or 2 MHz increments (o'clocking capable boards).
266 FSB is mostly a marketing gimick. The actual FSB frequency is
133. DDR uses the rising and falling parts of the sine wav signal
to 'double' the bus. It doesn't. It gives about a 5 to 7%
increase in performance over non-DDR.

Your multiplier and FSB settings in bios is correct for your
cpu. Many boards that don't have high multipliers, further
multiply lower settings. EG, your board probly uses a 5 setting,
multiplied by 3, or a 7.5 multiplied by 2.

BTW, Jetway is one of the dozen or so brand names PC Chips
boards are sold under. PC Chips often makes the same model
board, but uses different chips and bioses on them. So whatever
manual you find for that board, might not match it exactly.

First, if it is working at the correct speed, what is the problem.

Second, the multiplier is normally set automatically on most modern
motherboards, so even if your manual jumpers can only go to 12.5, the board
is capable of autosetting itself for the 15x. The manual jumpers are only
there for people that want to run their processors at something other than
the default.

I ask because having installed an AMD 2400xp (2000MHz) FSB 266, I am unsure
if I installed it correctly, the (Jetway) website has a table of cpu ratio
jumper settings for a range of processors, for this one it says 15x alongside
a FSB of 133 but the max range of jumper settings in the manual and on the
website only goes to 12.5x. I know next to nothing about the subject so am
unsure whether to go for 12.5x or is it simply a matter of :-
15 x 133 = 1995 so with a 266FSB should it be 2000/266 = 7.5 ?
To further confuse me the Bios has 2 settings for frequency settings 100 or
133MHz.

Output of cpuinfo :-
processor : 0
vendor_id : AuthenticAMD
cpu family : 6
model : 8
model name : AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2400+
stepping: 1
cpu MHz : 2008.623
cache size : 256 KB
fdiv_bug: no
hlt_bug : no
f00f_bug: no
coma_bug: no
fpu : yes
fpu_exception : yes
cpuid level : 1
wp : yes
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca
cmov pat pse36 mmx fxsr sse syscall mmxext 3dnowext 3dnow
bogomips: 4010.80

If yours works the same way as mine, the rating of the cpu will be
according to how you set the FSB in bios.
I'm guessing you cureently have FSB=100 which gives you a CPU 2008.623
MHz, if you set your FSB to 133 it will then change to show CPU 2400 MHz
or there abouts. Your CPU might do more if your board would support FSB
266, or is it that your board can only do FSB=133 which gives a CPU MHz
of 2008.623 , while if your board would support FSB 266 it would give
the CPU MHz of 2400 it's full rating, I'm not sure, form your
description, which way round it is.
John
